Yes - a cracked flex plate can cause a "knocking noise" - I had a 90' Silverado, that had a same issue. It's not a difficult job to check, swap it out. Just need some ramps, or good quality jack...

No real need to remove the windshield to replace the reveal molding. It is snapped it place and held by whatever residual urethane squeezed out when the windshield was installed into the channel....
