That clutch has been slipping, maybe just slightly, but something has caused it to slip (like the throwout bearing constantly riding on the pressure plate), heating up the pressure plate and flywheel.

You're going to have to find the car's VIN to have any shot at all at locating it, and even with a VIN, that's no guarantee that anyone at your state's DMV will be willing to help you....

The gauges in 3rd gens are notoriously inaccurate and are only of value for 'relative' readings rather than absolute readings.

Before doing anything else, obtain an inexpensive Infrared temp gun (can be had for less than $20.00) and see if the engine is actually overheating.

When you bought the car, did you also get ALL the original smog and other components previously installed on the car? That's what you'd need to accomplish that goal. Probably not practical at this...
