A pretty cut and dry way to check for ignition/injector pulse from the pickup coil is to watch the tachometer during cranking. It should bounce or raise up off the peg, if it is completely still...

Vats doesn't stop the fuel pump from priming and running. Are you basing everything on not hearing the pump? Have you checked your fuel rail pressure? Do you have power at the relay?

Sounds like an excessive vacuum leak. The SD cars aren't as sensitive to vacuum leaks as the MAF cars, but usually a bouncing idle indicates that the computer is swing adjusting because unaccounted...

Pump smoke in after the maf, anywhere smoke comes out is a vacuum leak. Check you tube for some homemade units or the guy that just puffs a cigar and blows in a vacuum line :)

If no codes I wouldn't bother with MAF or O2 yet, although I have seen dirty/degraded MAFs cause lean conditions without setting...
