Car won’t start sometimes
I have a 90 rs Camaro 305 tbi. Sometimes the car won’t start after I drive it usually when I go inside a convenience store. When I turn the key the security light stays on so I’m assuming the vats is preventing the car from starting, but after dealing with this issue on and off for over a year the easiest fix has been to wait around 5 to 10 minutes and then the car will resume as normally when I turn the key. My question is that usually when the vats is malfunctioning it prevents the car from starting period it won’t start if you wait for a few minutes to pass, does anyone know what could cause the vats to kick in then preform normally after a set amount of time?

A Huge Vat Of Trouble
Dirty contacts in the lock cylinder, wire(s) with a bad connection.
The 2 wires that connect to the lock cylinder are a
White wire with a black stripe, and a purple wire with a White stripe.
Use a voltmeter/ohmmeter to monitor.
First monitor with the voltmeter.
Connect one probe wire to one lock cylinder wire, and the other probe wire the other lock cylinder wire.
Insert and remove the key.
If you see voltage, with the key inserted, wiggle the key and wires and observe for change.
A change is consistent with a loose connection.
If you see no voltage when you perform the above test, use the ohmmeter and repeat.
If you see a change in resistance when wiggling, that will be consistent with a loose connection.

Like Nina said, you're experiencing an intermittent issue, probably caused by bad connection. The most common problem I've seen is the wires at the lock cylinder deteriorating. I usually just do the resistor bypass at that point.

In the back of my head I’m relieved that it’s a simple fix by bypassing but I’d like to try to get it running correctly so a new ignition cylinder and key would probably be my best bet huh

Before you buy anything, go through the troubleshooting procedures that Nina described.
I just put what I typically have found to be the problem, but there are other things that could be causing the issue, like the VATs module itself, but start by verifying continuity through the switch, and jiggling/turning the key to see for changes. You need to see the same resistance value at the wire connector as on the key.
If you do end up going with a new cylinder and key, you will need to have your resister pellet switched over to the new key.
