I was taught that you pretty much are never using every bit of reverse in a manual. light throttle, work the clutch. You're only going a few feet, not a few miles, so it's not much wear and tear.

My first guess is the water pump is shot, even if it's not weeping. Take the thermostat out and start it up, see if you're getting any flow.

My 89 2.8 has the smog pump deleted, and doesn't have any codes. I can't say whether it affected mileage, it was done before I bought it. I still get 20 mpg or so with mixed driving, though.

Interesting. My hardtop 89 has slots, but the front two were the twist in Christmas tree style. I wonder if they'd been swapped out before, then. It was the same on both sides.
