I used the Vice Grip garage method also. Be aware though, you could still push the hydraulic lifter down without noticing and not be at 0 lash. I assume you are doing it with intake still in place....

Had the exact same problem. OEM fluid after 30 years on a completely original IROC-Z low milage. I ended-up pushing the brake pedal a bit with bleeder removed. It unjammed it lol....

I've been running an Aeromotive (#13301) for over 10 years without issue. Fuel pressure is always stable and I never had to readjust it. It makes funky noise on initial priming but that's about it....
