my 86 305 tpi hesitates for a second after every shift and shudders when accelarating. if i back off slightly and try again, its ok. it does this going up a hill or slight grade too. at highway...

Try reaching down in and gently and slowly pull the unit up. You should hear it run when you do this. When you open the hatch do so slowly so the motor comes up with it. It always works with mine.
