Neither the cap nor the rotor can go on 'wrong' as they are both keyed to the distributor body.
The first thing that comes to mind is you mixed up the firing order with your wire re+re.

I'd suggest you pull the airhorn and inspect the float bowl for debris

Another option is to take a piece of 5/8" heater hose and modify it as follows;
Use a piece around 12" to make it easy to work with...
Use a sharp blade and carefully split the hose length-wise...

I had a smaller carb, the Avenger 670, and we couldn't rod and jet it enough. I ran too lean as it lacks airflow.
But that was my situation. The carb seems to work for others, but it wouldn't break...

Edelbrock #1407 ( Manual ) and #1411 ( Electric ) are 750 CFM and I have had good luck with them with a 300+HP motor. Buy the Edelbrock tuning kit with the rods and jets etc. and have fun. Any 600...

City overheating is usually an Airflow issue
Highway overheating is usually a Coolant flow issue
