Neither the cap nor the rotor can go on 'wrong' as they are both keyed to the distributor body.
The first thing that comes to mind is you mixed up the firing order with your wire re+re.

Another option is to take a piece of 5/8" heater hose and modify it as follows;
Use a piece around 12" to make it easy to work with...
Use a sharp blade and carefully split the hose length-wise...

I don't know what power motor you are going to install but I would recommend you buy a larger carb if you are putting that motor...
