Help with my rear

i have a question that has bugged me since the first trip i took to the track with my car about 4 years ago.

as far as i know i do not have a posi rear, no RPO G80 and the original owner(my grandmother works with him) says the rear has never been changed

but given the right circumstances i can spin both tires, is that possible?

one circumstance was my friend took it down the track its first time when i bought it, i have a video on one of my computers, that i have yet to find, but it shows the car spinning both wheels during the burnout.

also one summer night i was leaving a gathering of my friends with about 8 people standing around i hear "do a burnout" so i stopped, and began to lay into it, let off the brake and held the pedal to the floor, about a minute later as i hit the highway i get a phone call telling me to turn around and come look at what my car did

sure enough when i get back the smoke is just starting to clear i get out of the car walk up to where the burnout began and there was one line, then about 3 feet past where the burnout began two lines appear which ride all the way out and eventually back to one line before traction is gained again

do you think my rear was swapped and its just a worn out posi? im going to try the jack the car up, put it in neutral and spin one wheel trick, to see if its LSD

idk its just been bugging me and wanted to know what you guys thought

if i come across the vid i will post it up

around Were i lived nearly everybody drives like that, we were 10 minutes from the track and almost everybody owns a drag car or has a family member who does

its all in good fun, nobody gets pissed, what gives 3rdgenners a bad name is the kids who think just because they drive a "camaro" or "firebird" that their 305 TBI can take anything on the street

Please, my thread isn't about burnouts its asking if anybody has heard of an Open diff being able to leave double lines at all or should i be checking if my rear was swapped(which im going to do either way)

Under the right circumstances, yes. If you wish to be absolutely certain, drop the cover and take a peek (when was the last time the fluid was changed?). The following link shows the different possibilities:

Re: Help with my rear

One wheel burnouts are very hard on the differential. Eventually the pinion gears will weld themselves to the cross shaft. You may be on your way to ruining the differential. When it gets bad enough it will break.

last time the fluid was changed was when i first bought the car and we went over it doing a full tune up and fluid change on it, back when i first got the car i was almost 17, and only knew basic maintenance about cars, but i will look into it further.

checked out the link you gave, i will definitely be using that info in the next month or so

too, i will look further into that as well, i haven't done a burnout in over 2 1/2 years now or even raced it for that matter, but if my rear is about to give, ive been looking for a posi rear with something more aggressive than 2.73's lol, maybe its time to really jump on getting a new rear

Re: Help with my rear

I'm not saying that your rear end is about to break, but if you do a lot of one wheel burnouts then it could be going bad. Here is what a cross shaft can look like after doing a lot of one wheel burnouts.

ill have to take a look into everything,

i have no idea how many burnouts my car has done when the previous owner had it (he was 60 something years old back in 88 when he bought the thing lol) but i know that in the 4 years time ive owned the car its done 3 at the track, 4 on the street, and every time only one wheel begins the spin then they both spin up
