BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

Shopping for new shoes this spring. I am not going to be doing any track time, 100% street, so I think I don't need anything super aggressive. I hope to not drive in the rain, but life happens. I do expect to take a drive on a nice day in November if it is sunny and dry even though it may be cool out.

Leaning toward the BF sport comp2 summer tires. Then I noticed the have an all season version too, the A/S. Just wondering how bad the trade-off would be for summer performance if I got the A/S or had bad the trade-off would be in the cooler days in the fall with the summer tires.

Thoughts?

I would think it would depend entirely on how much you'll be driving in cooler weather and how hard you'll push your tires in perfect conditions. For the amount I drove my car in the fall and early spring, I've always opted for the performance orientated tire rather than an all -season. Self restraint is in order on the cold mornings I find myself out and about.
I have Sport COMP-2's.

EDIT: For clarification, this is a street driven vehicle, across country every year or so and sees the drag strip when possible. Track tires are slicks.

Re: BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

I don't think you and I would be able to tell the difference between all season and seasonal tires when driving on the street. When driving on public roads I am too afraid to push my car hard enough to notice those variables. It seems like every turn I want to take fast has little pebbles on it, a bump or a small pothole. Not to mention you probably have multiple driving surfaces that won't be conducive to traction tests. Concrete, cement, asphalt, cheap tar and gravel roads, etc,.

If you want to drive the car in the cold weather and not drive it like a it the engine has a knock in it I would get the all season tires. I've driven my seasonal tires in ~40° weather and they had no traction for aggressive driving. It was like driving on a bald, dry-rotted tire.

Re: BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

November in Canada is way too cold for a Summer tire. Either choose the A/S and drive it whenever or choose the Summer tire and store it in the winter months. It has been my experience that below 50° F you don't want to run a Summer-only tire. Last time I looked the A/S had a mileage warranty and was cheaper than the Summer tire was too.

Edit: I too run the Summer Sport Comp 2 tires, but I don't drive this car when it's below 40°F outside either. At 40°F it's very easy to spin them.

Both tires are great in the rain - the AS may be a tiny bit better, but the true advantage is for colder weather driving.

I know you get good summer weather in Ontario and it is doubtful you will be taking the car out in the snowy/cold weather of the winter - so you may just want to go for the summer tire. That is what I would do in your case.

Re: BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

I appreciate the feedback, all. I was leaning toward summers to begin with... I think either tire would be good.

Looking at the specs, the AS has a better UTQG but is 2lbs heavier and a bit narrower on the tread width which I think seals the deal in favour of the summer version.

I have the sport comp 2 summers and love them. Great traction and pretty good for ware considering how I drive. My car doesn't see the rain and gets put away before it gets too cold but even on cooler days the handle great. I will repeat the purchase when they ware out. Probably rears before fronts.

I had Sport Comp 2's on my daily as well as my T/A. I never had an issue with them in the cold as long as the road was dry. They do start to get very loud and hard below about 10°C. They're great in the rain too for a summer tire.

I even took my T/A out a few weeks ago when the roads were dry. It was probably about 0°C and the traction wasn't too bad considering.

Re: BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

I just upgraded to Comp A/S and they are GREAT on wet roads...I used to get sideways at moderate acceleration when it shifted during a turn but now it stays solid!

Re: BFG comp2 vs. comp 2 A/S

We ran a competition autocross series last year where the provided tire for the 2 leased vehicles being used were the COMP 2 AS. Surprisingly the cars held their own against fully prepped ProTouring cars on stickier tires. The 2018 series will actually have a cash payout of $4000 to the car with the most consistent times running a COMP 2 AS tire. You really can't go wrong with either for a daily driver.
