Color coded rims in 1988 ?

I have a 1988 sport coupe with 15" wheels painted red to match the body. Was this a backyard job or was it a factory option.

Re: Color coded rims in 1988 ?

they didn't have color coded wheels in 88. In fact I think its the only year they had center caps that were not black. My 88 came factory with silver wheels and silver caps. I'm not sure when they started painting them to match the body color, but I do know stock 91-92 RS wheels were painted body color. I'd be willing to bet your car came with silver wheels/ silver center caps. I've never seen color matched wheels on a car that had different color ground effects, only solid color cars.

Thanks for the silver factory pic example.

So, could my wheels originally be from a 90s RS red car or were RS rims changed in design by then?

The silver accent color is rubbing off on the outer lip and the red is starting to appear. This is actually one of the better condition wheels. I wouldn't be surprise if a previous owner painted them to match the body.

Just trying to find out the originality of the car. Basically everything looks factory original except the wheels, front seats and radiator.

They could be from a 90s RS...I think that wheel was pretty much the same design from 82-92, just painted differently.

If they were painted from the factory, the "sliver" would be aluminum like they were taped off prior to painting. If the silver on the outer lip and edges of wheel is paint, someone painted it themselves for sure.

The wheels pictured were the wheels on your car if it's an 88 coupe. Pretty sure that pic came from an 88 brochure, and your Camaro is a standard model. I think they look really good totally silver, especially since the bottom of your car is silver. The seats were likely the grey/black high back buckets, with solid black on the back and rear sides of the seats.
