15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

Hey,I have a 1983 Z28, and am gonna put raised white letter tires back on her. I need your help.... What kind of tires do you guys recommend? My hubby has the BFG on his 1968 SS, and they look great on his, but I think the lettering will not look right on the Z. I think they will be too small. Thought about the Cooper Cobras. HELP!!!!!

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

I have been running Cooper Cobras for about 6 years now.( black side out )
If your looking for a performance tire this is not it.
If you just want an old school mussel car look on a DD than this is a nice tire.

The tires are great for my application. Grip well dry and in the rain.
It was between the BF Goodrich Radial T/A or the Cooper Cobra G/T.

I chose the Cobra and will continue using them.
The first photo is of my Cobra's with black side out.

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

I don't know what look your going for or how wide your wheels are but this is how I set mine up.
"Staggered".

235/60r15 on 7in. wide wheels front. (26.1 Diameter tire)
255/60r15 on 8in. wide wheels rear. (27.1 Diameter tire)
That gives me a 1in. taller tire in the rear in a respectable size and that IMO is perfect for my street car.

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

Like Ron U.S.M.C. said "I don't know what look your going for".

For myself, I like to keep the look of all original equipment, just like the day it rolled out the doors at the Van Nuys factory. BUT, that's just me.
So from day one, I have alway ran on Goodyear (RWL) Eagle GT's - p235/60r15.....

On my '84 T/A that I use to have, when I bought it new, it came with Goodyear RBL (Raised Black Letter) Eagle GT's.

I will have a delemina the next time I need tires, as Discount Tire Co. tells me that Goodyear no longer makes the RWL Eagle GT's.

IMO, wheels & tires are what makes a car stand out.

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

Thank you both very much for your input. I am going for the old school look too. I don't need a performance tire. She is my baby and won't be ran hard. I don't even take her down gravel roads, nor have her out in the rain. I simply want the old school muscle car look. I noticed too that Goodyear doessn't make the GT anymore, but I have read other reviews that folks don't care for them.

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

My husband likes his BFG's too. I just think the lettering on the tires are too small for our cars. I have seen pictures, and they just don't look right to me!! Have you guys heard anythink about the Firehawk Indy 500 tires? They also would look pretty good. Just not sure how they are as a tire. Looks can only take ya so far!! ha ha!!

I have Firehawks on my 88. Good tires! I hear the RWL tire may be discontinued soon, if not already, A shame.

I am a big fan of the BF Goodrich Radial TA's
Nothing screams 80's like a set of Radial TA's

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

I have Firestone Firehawk Indy's. Great tire for driving...wet or dry. My car drives very straight and smooth with them. Letter size is good too.

I currently have RWL out but have also put black walls out and outlined letters with white tire pen to resemble the Eagle GT RWO letters

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

I just went with factory stock size on all 4. 215/65 R15

BTW there is a sale pending on the car currently. If all goes as planned she will go to a good home!

I changed over to the 235/60/R15 about 10-11 years ago.
Better ride, handling and the most important part.... it looks a lot cooler !

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

Since the only real choice when you want to keep the stock diameter of 26in. is either the 215/65r15 = 26in. or the 235/60r15 = 26.1in.

If anyone is torn between the two sizes all you have to do is stop by your local tire shop and ask to see them side by side.

There’s not a large difference mathematically and you would not expect to see it much, but you can.

The only advantage the 215/65r15 has is your tire selection.

Re: 15" Z28 raised white letter tires?

I chose to remain stock because my car is stock and that's the size GM intended for my car in 1984. I'm sure either size would be fine as far as handling, etc.
