I need bigger tires for ground clearance!

Hey guys,

So I've done an LS1 swap on my car and i did the hawks longtube headers....

My problem now is that the $850 headers are now the lowest part of the car.

I have exactly 2.75" between the pavement and the bottom of my headers.

Has anyone put bigger tires/rims on their car for more ground clearance.

I have all stock suspension on my car, and I scrape EVERYTHING...

Right now, Im riding on 225/50R16 (on 16 iroc wheels) I know these tires are too small... I want to go a little taller than the stock 245/50R16.

Has anyone experimented with this? Whats the greatest tire diameter you've put on your third gen?

going to the proper factory tire size will net you a full inch in ground clearance. i wouldnt use tires to raise the high. have you replaced your springs lately? if you have te factory springs in there and have never been replaced they have sagged, a replacement set of stock MOOG springs will give you some height too.

Actually they will increase ground clearance by 0.5": 1" larger diameter/2.

If you put 235's on the front and run a 275/60/R15 on the back (on a 15x8 rim) it'll give you good clearance. If you have 15x7's look for the rear tire size that gives you a 28" tall tire.

Re: I need bigger tires for ground clearance!

Hey guys,

I actually have brand new factory replacement MOOG springs in there right now. (less than 50 miles on them!)

I have LS1 brakes up front so I need to run 16inch wheels. This car is a daily driver, which is why im scared of putting on some 17 or 18s for the sake of the ride.

Yes, the ride will degrade slightly when moving up to a 17" or 18" wheel. But as the 16" tire options are quickly becoming extinct, you should really consider a move up to a 17" wheel and tire right now.

You know the part number or exactly which springs are the stock ones from Moog? I'm getting alston SFCs installed at the moment and I have lowering springs that came with car that makes it scrape enough already. I'd rather go back to stock height.

With all the moddern upgrades you have I'm surprised you're not running some 17s already. Id upgrade to 17s with 275/40/17 meat on them. Camaros never look bad with good ole 17 inch C4 ZR1s... get the 11.5 inch wide ones and run a 315/35 out back....Or whatever else your heart desires...

Re: I need bigger tires for ground clearance!

Running the same set up but with Factory size tires and my long tubes have not touched anything. 245/50/16s are plenty available. Khumo has about 3 different tires alone for this size. Wheel arch height is right at 27"

Just a quick search on Discount Tire Direct pulled up 10 different tires.

Re: I need bigger tires for ground clearance!

17" or 18" wheels are perfect for daily driver and I won't say ride wheel degrade , it just becomes more responsive lol

But honestly the ride quality isn't bad for a DD and I prefer it over the 16" wheel
