Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

Now before anyone goes on a rant about the blasphemy of doing this, I already have my mind set on doing this if they'll fit. They are stock 96 cobra rims with 245s on the front and 275s on the rear. The adapter/spacer I'll need to make a ford bolt pattern is 1.25'' (31.75mm) thick. Cobra wheels have a +30mm offset with 5.72'' backspacing. So if I'm doing this right I'll be at a backspace of 4.47 inches with the adapter, with approximately a -1.75mm offset. From what I can see they would fit just fine, but I would appreciate a second opinion before I go spend the money on the spacers

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

Need to know the wheel widths before anybody can offer advice. That backspacing will fit the car, but without the width, I don't know if they will stick out. 4.5" of bs works with a 8 and maybe a 8.5 wheel, after that, its not enough

Oh, forgot to mention, they are 17x8. If it does work, It'll be a few days before the spacers would arrive. I'll post some pics once mounted.

They will look awsome, I was thinking of running Saleen rims.

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

I wouldn't be mad about this if it was a good looking wheel but the 96 wheels are not good looking at all, even on a Stang.
Use a 17x9 95 cobra wheel with 275/40/17s all around and then you'll have something!
cool 95 wheels

not so cool 96 wheels

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

To each their own, but I personally like the stock cobra rims, and they'll look a heck of a lot better than my old beat up stock wheels. I do have a set of cobra r replicas, but they're on my 94 gt. they would be way to big to fit on my camaro

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

Why do you think the "R" wheels are to big? they are 17x9 or 9.5 right?? We put them on my friends 86 GT with 275/40/17s all around.
I have 17x9.5 96 WS6 wheels on my 89 formula 350 with a 275/40/17 tire on all 4 corners...

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

The stock cobra wheels are hideous! The cobra r wheels with some 275 tires would look perfectly on a 3rd gen. (Minus the cobra center cap)

Cobra r's on my gt are 17x9 and 17x10.5. 275s on the front and 285s on the rear. I was using a 315 on the rear but they were causing some issues so I stepped down. With the ford offset, I'm pretty sure I couldnt get wider than an 8.5" ford rim on my camaro.

I'm not sure what the BS on the ford wheel compared to the GM wheel??
I thought they were close? your going to need a spacer most likely anyway.
Im sure if I looked I could find the info..

I'm assuming they are the same as the cobra wheels, not so much that is a problem, it's more that I haven't seen an adapter wider than 1.25''. No way I could put them on with that adapter.

To each their own, I personally like them, and it's a nice changed from your everyday corvette/4th gen wheel that most 3rd gens run

Re: Looking at putting on a set of cobra wheels on

Im running 2" & 2.25" adapters on my camaros ZR1 rims & they are GS offsets. I got a deal on some Black Bullit rims 17x8.5 & 17x10.5 ford bolt pattern. Gonna use 2" ford to chevy adapters.

Nice, If you don't mind, where did you find 2'' adapters, I've only found the 1.25'' ones

Yeah IMO the 96 Cobra wheels are not very good looking. I had a set of the silver 99 Cobra wheels on my slammed 95 stang and it looked killer.

I've always thought those were a marginally cool wheel at best. But since they now offer them for every make of car out there, and it's common place, they've lost their sliver of appeal. I think I've seen them (in person, not just on the interwebs) on everything from focus', taurus', s10s, civics, to even a bmw. It's like the 2000's version of the torque thrust.

Got the spacers today and mounted the wheels on, I personally think they look pretty sharp now that they are actually on the car, no fitment issues whatsoever. I'll post pics once I get a chance to take some, have to go to work shortly so no time now
