Tire balancing

Hey All,

I am wondering. I am in the process of polishing my rims and getting new tires put on. I would be disappointed if the the weights were put on the front of the rim and destroy the appearance. Can these weights by attached to the inside of the rim??

Thanks

Paul

Re: Tire balancing

OE third gen rims aren't designed for that. Theoretically it could be done with tape weights, but even if it is possible (which I'm sure it is) the wheel/tire wouldn't be balanced correctly and you will most likely end up with vibrations. You could always have them static balanced. That's where the wheels are balanced on one plane instead of both planes, but you will probably still end up with vibrations and there's no telling which side of the wheel is going to call for weight. Honestly it's better to just bite the bullet and have them dynamic balanced with clip on weights. After all, what's the point of having a nice looking ride if it's a nightmare to drive?

Re: Tire balancing

it's called static bal.

and yes it works fine. all my drag wheels are done that way..

rides has smooth has Glass.

they make about 10 diff typs of weights. to clamp on to your rims
not just the Tape weights (yuck).some guys use them.(always clean your rims first)

installed with a small dead blow hammer they snap over the inside lip of the rim.

make sure the tire shop you use knows what they are doing..not all do.
i worked for Ford and GM doing tires. this is how I know

with todays tech. you should never see a weight on the outside of a rim!

Re: Tire balancing

I took my car into Discount Tire to get them rotated. They took the weights off the outside and put them on the inside when they swapped tires. I'm running the stock GTA honeycomb wheels.

(And yes, they did actually take the tires off the wheels due to the front/rear differences on GTA wheels) and not simply put the whole tire/wheel from the rears on the fronts and vice versa.

Re: Tire balancing

If they're taped, take a picture of the weights on each (and number each wheel) so if they fall off, you can replace them. I had 245/50 tires put on a few years ago and many of the weights they put on fell off so I had to replace them myself. (they wouldn't offer any balancing guarantee because I didn't want clip-on weights. )

Re: Tire balancing

most of the tire shops have Kids working for them $9hr
toss them a Coke and a smile. (tell me it's not true)

and they dont take time to clean the wheels before they place the stick on weights on them. and they will Fall off. and just moving the crud around. dont cut it.. must be clean = stick on.

we all know this..but try to tell them / ask them. did you clean the wheels before. and you get the.
We have Been Doing Tires for a Long Time..
they have had a tire shop name for a long time (MABY)..LOL

your name maby. has been doing them for years.. But how about the Kids you have doing your tires..do they know??

always check you stuff when a shop touches your Car!
