best performance tires for a daily driver
so im looking for 245/50/16 or 255/50/16 its a daily driver, parked thru winter. but i do alot of highway trips, for example im driving probably around 40 hours total of long trips this summer. so i also dont want a real noisy tire.
I want something with good wet/dry traction and not going to wear down in 10-15k.
considering the firestone firehawk wideoval 500
bfg gsd3
fuzion zr1
thoughts?

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
those choices are great choices in 245. I have heard the gsd3 gets better traction but impossible to find. You could also go with the gforce sports in 255. The only other tires in 255 really would be the MT street radials and Gforce T/A drag radials.
IMO go with the gsd3 in 245 if you can find them you wont be disappointed. The gsd3's are hard to find but there are some places that have stock left you just have to find em.
Ive heard the Nitto 555 are great tires as well. nitto 555 in front and 555r in the back are a great combo a lot of people use for street race around here. Give them a look I was going to purchase them before I bought my new wheels with Goodyear eagle F1s.

what i hear about the gsd3's, is they are being redesigned/updated. not sure when thats supposed to be done. the problem with some of the ones now are that many are made in china and are total crap compared to the other ones.

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
I have the nitto nt555 extreme performances on all four corners my bird in the 275/40-17 variety and have put 12k on them since january and they are still just as grippy as the first time I got them warm. A really quiet tire for being a directional and has been wearing really evenly (305tbi= no wheelspin). These are the only tires I have had on these size wheels so I can offer no comparison to competitors in the same size and application though.

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
My 92 305 has wideovals.
Not a bad tire overall but certainly not the best. Dry traction on the street is quite good, wet is mediocre and track not the greatest.
I've been to the track once and ran ~25 passes on a slow night.
14.6 at 94, 2.1 60' with a quick spin was my best. Im new to the track so take the times with a grain of salt.
Car is 305 tpi, stock 1le suspension, stock rear and T5 (possibly clutch/flywheel ?? prev owner did work)
That said, I had loads of spin and feathering didn't get me anywhere. In wet conditions, wheels will spin under power in 2nd gear. Lateral grip in all conditions is good and the tires let go smoothly and predictably. I have 1500-2000 miles and wear is minimal considering the abuse they've taken. Tires are pretty quiet and ride is good for a z rated tire.
They aren't the best but are a good tire, im happy with them.

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
I had a set of Fusion ZRi tires on my old Chevy Lumina. While that car is a far cry from a 3rd gen, I was young and drove it in quite a spirited manner. Never had issues with those tires. They were quiet and had good dry / wet traction. Used them in light snow a few times as well, and they weren't terrible.
I think they are hard to beat for the price.

245/50/16 Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 being installed this week, along with other steering mods, but i'll let you guys know the results when they're in. Oh yea. GSD3's are impossible to find, if you do find em, you are LUCKY.

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
Will do! They are getting installed as we speak, along with a new rag joint and a Lee 670 performance steering box. This should all improve handling! I can't wait to see how much the traction/noise/handling will improve with these tires instead of my bald Futura Sports!

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
Holy cow... These tires are freakin' awesome!!! Keep in mind, my old tires were worn out in the rear, and the fronts were decent, but still...
1) Road noise: Almost gone... It was for the first time a PLEASURE to drive the car slowly because i did not hear any road noise at all!
2) Traction: Helluva lot better than before (that was a given), but i've still yet to run at the track (waiting to just wear them in a bit more before racing).
3) Handling: Well, from the somewhat spirited driving i've done so far, I can say I feel confident that these tires WILL keep me on the road and not fish tailing (which I used to do all the time before). They will keep grip and screach alot, but don't fish tail. This is a major element that makes these tires great IMO!
4) Tread wear: So far so good.. Only about 100 miles on them so far... I'll update soon.. The weekend up ahead is gonna be HOT with no rain and 30 degrees celsius.
5) Road comfort: These tires are GREAT over bumps and provide a quiet, comfortable smooth ride. Reason i can confirm this: My girlfriend actually enjoyed the ride quality this time!!

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
Will take pics tomorrow with iphone and post.. IMO They look great on the car man, seriously.
Took the car for another 100 mile drive (highway, city, street racing a bit, pot holes). Noticed a few things: Car is MUCH more predictable, I know i've said it before, but worth mentioning again since our cars aren't the best for being predictable.. Also i've noticed that it screeches the tires now when turning a corner ultra fast (didn't do it before) or when ripping it hard from a stop (or when it shifts from 1-2 in WOT with my rebuilt tranny).

Thanks for the pics. Nice clean car, the tires look good. How do you find the sidewall stiffness around corners now that you've driven the car some more.

Re: best performance tires for a daily driver
They're still not fully broken in yet, but let me tell you they do grip corners like mad, but you can tell they're very soft but don't lose traction, ever! so far so good! I'm actually able to feel the body roll in my car, which means i may need to lower the car (drop spindles) and get stiffer struts and shocks like koni yellows (my tokico blues are decent, but obviously not stiff enough). After 500 miles i'll take em for a psychopathic drive and put a more accurate review. 86TA has these tires too, i wonder how they are doing for him after all this time?
