Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

What is the widest rim that will fit a third gen with No spacers, no fender/tire contact problems, and the most modification being the use of a BFH?

I know nothing of wheel fitment, and I want to get the biggest 17 inch TT2's I can get on my car without spacers.

depending on ride height, 17x11's fit, and with the proper backspacing you dont need spacers. You may have to do a little more than just hammering, you probably wont find the correct backspacing though, would be 7 or 7.5. You will most likely have to cut off the bumpstop area and maybe need tubular control arms.

a 17x10 should fit fine, want sometihng like 6.5" of backspacing. Shouldnt have any issues with fender rolling unless the car is lowered a lot

WILL fit. I know nothing of offsets, backspacing ETC. I know I want to buy a set of TT2's at the end of the winter and I need to know which ones to get. Tirerack can't help here. They're not selling them anymore

Re: Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

17" x 9"/5"bs front

17" x 10"/6" bs rear with BFH work 6" may also require tubular LCAs, for the extra bit of tire clearance. 5"bs out back is a no brainer, no mods, direct fit.

But don't be scared to do what you need to get what you WANT to fit.

So 18x9 front and 18x10 rears are no good for straight swap?

Re: Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

P265/50R15 and they don't seem to rub. Prev Owner had them on there, and I'm growing used to the old school look. It would appear they would rub if pushed up far enough? If someone is seriously interested in knowing I can look at my tires again for rub marks but I didn't notice any last time I looked.

Re: Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

I have had stock P235/60/R15s, P245/45/R17s, and I am gonna assume as long as the math lines up with whatever size you put on, they will work as long as bachspacing is good.

It looks like P235/35/R20's with an 8" width wheel would fit in the same space as the above wheels being a total of only .4" bigger in diameter total. My vehicles rides at stock hight, so I don't see any issues with that. Only thing at this point is the back spacing.

Re: Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

i just threw on some ford anthracite FR500 17x 10.5" rims with 315/35/r17 sumoto tires on my rear without any issues... they have 6.8" backpacing. +1.10" positive offset. but this wont work on yours. right now i have ok clerance but im waiting to drop the car to see how they really fit. im running a ford 8.8" tho which is 1.5" wider in each wheel well than the stock rear.

Re: Whats the largest rim that will fit a 3rd gen?

Well I have an 82 with a Ford 9" rear as well. This is why I was looking at 5th gen Camaro wheels. I think I can get a set of them on the rear without spacers, however the fronts would require some.

As a note, CTW Motorsports wheels (my company) are 17" x 9.5" with a 0 offset (about 5.1" BS) and fit all four corners without rubbing on any suspension parts, front or rear. The outer edge of the wheels line up with the fender wells on all corners/ With a 17" wheel, you need to worry about the tie rod end as it won't be inside the wheel like an 18" or larger size will.

I am planning to get a pair of the wheels widened to 11" as a demonstration, by adding another 1.5" inside (will be 6.6" BS) - which will just clear the control arms (maybe not), will require removal of the bumpstops, and perfect alignment of the rearend with an adjustable PHR, and possibly some sheet metal massaging.

That shouldn't be any problem as stock wheels are 8" wide from 1984 forward, although a larger diameter than stock tire on a 20" wheel may be tricky with a very low car - the rear at least...

Yea I don't see why it wouldn't work for you. I have 20inch rims on the back and 18imch on the front.

You should only put the 275 on the back and stick to a smaller size on the front.

Yes, your can easily fit 275/40R17 on all 4 corners. I have that size on my car. The CTW motorsports wheels a great option because they are designed for our cars. Second option is 4thgen 17x9.5's with bolt on spacers. Third is some custom forged wheels like welds, forge lines, etc which are really expensive.

If you go to a 18x10.5, the wheel should clear the steering knuckle and fit a 295 tire. just keep your overall tire diameter under 26".

17x9 will fit easybut I'm not sure on that backspacing but it sounds too deep. What wheel is it? 4thgen wheels and c4 and newer vette wheels are 2" deeper than thirdgen wheels and can be mounted with 2" bolt on spacers. If you really like the wheels you're considering and they are priced right you can always buy some bolt on spacers to make them work. A little measuring goes a long way! it needs to clear the steering knuckle and the strut.

18x10.5 will fit with a 315/30/18 tire with some clearancing to the inside and no fender rolling. But I strongly suggest a good wheel measuring tool to determine the correct backspacing for your brake and axle combination and the amount of trimming required inside the fender wells. This picture shows Forgelines with 315/30/18s on them on the final fitment test. A steering stop did have to be manufactured on the A Arm along with inner wheel well clearancing to get these to fit through a full range of suspension and steering motion.

275-305/50r18 for the rear end? I'm going to put my rears up front so I need a new pair of rears. I'm hoping to use 50r18 for the rears to give it the muscle car rake. I haven't seen anyone mention this size yet.

Will that work? I'm hoping for 255/50r17 front then 275+/50r18 rear. Maybe a on a 4th gen rear axle too. Wheels are gonna be a set of American Racing TorqueThrust II.

i got 275/45/18 on all four corners. C6 reproduction 18x9.5s. Rear is ford 8.8 but it's spaced out for 4th gen width. Like the tires a lot actually. Just enough sidewall to help with road bumps etc.

305 will fit but u need to verify wheel backspacing etc. I'm also lowered on vogtland springs in the pic

i had 315 35/17 on the rears for a couple of years and it was ok. Not worth it if you don't want the headaches associated with wide tires. But I have contemplated going with 18x10.5 and a 305/315 version on the rear. I had trimmed the rear bump stop already but 1" closer to the frame would be tight!

You really like 50 series tires! Lol

Maybe you don't understand how tire sizes work.
275 - width of tire in mm (millimeters)
40 - means the sidewall is 40% as tall as the tire is wide. So it will be shorter on a 225 and taller on a 305 regardless of rim.
R17 - 17" Rim.

Search on tire rack and look at the specs of the tires. It will tell you the over all diameter. A 50 series would be pretty tall in any of those sizes.

Tire Rack is a dud anyway, they won't sell you anything their "book" doesn't say fits. Until they see it themselves, in their own shop, or have an OE spec, it's no sale. They used to let you cheat if you claimed it was a "kit car", probably not anymore. I learned this the hard way helping a friend with a Fiero. We ended up tucking 17x8s up front and 17x9s under the back, on 235/40s and 265/40s, and we posted pics, but Tire Rack called him a liar.
