I write you from France, I drive a 1983 v6 Camaro (carbs, 173ci). I am going to replace the exhaust, which is a custom-made from previous owner. First I would like to know if anybody has a non-catalyst version as I have. You can find attached the original emissions label from my car. There's no catalyst on my car, it's been replaced by an empty intermediate Flowmaster muffler. I have no muffler at the back either: yes the sound is just horrible and I wake up the neighbourhood at each start... so time to come back to original.
So my question is: on a non-catalyst v6, at the exit of production-line, what was the replacement for catalytic converter? An intermediate muffler? A straight-pipe?
The tail pipes are added on. The original exhaust looked like this. This dual muffler/resonator setup sounded really good. This should bolt up to your current intermediate pipe.
Heard it was a pretty common accessory back then in Northern Europe because of fog and pretty bad weather. I don't think that's an original option, though.

First time I see this! Seems to fit my exhaust line pattern as it separates in 2 lines over my transmission, indeed! Thanks a lot! Now I have to find one... not common in common parts dealers' catalogues... I have found one on Ebay but it says ' Rare special performance option for 82-84 Camaro Z28 and Firebird Trans Am only '. Mine is a Sports Coupe v6, was it also an option on it?

Thanks for your feedback. Have found one as on the picture you sent me at 1350usd... only for the resonators and tailpipes, without shipping-custom etc... and another one used, 350usd with the complete cat-back line that I already have. The other solutions I may have, when available, respect the following pattern, single box with single or dual exit. And I would need to replace my intermediate line. But I understand from what you say that the dual resonators does sound really good.
The dual resonators sound good but are very expensive. Swapping the full exhaust to an 83 and up style is far less expensive and will sound better than that you have now. It's all preference at this point. There will be no performance difference.
I keep up with my exhaust job, I am looking for a dual box resonator muffler. Seems to be the original configuration by looking at my pictures at the start of this talk, and regarding your informations. Would any of you have one for sell, in decent condition? Shipping would be to France. I also ask on my side to F body used parts companies, including ones with salvage cars.
It's going to be very difficult to find one. I haven't seen one in years. You could contact HAWKs f body and see if they have one. They had lots of used parts. If you can find a good fabrication facility making something similar may be an option.

Thought about the fabrication facility indeed, but I am very curious on the sound with the original part. I have found some on ebay, one seems very used, the other one as new or near but over thousand dollars... without shipment. I have called Hawks, Bill Graham and Trans Am Creations, they haven't got one. I am waiting answers from other companies. I will keep you updated.
Fabrication wise, to reproduce it, is there sth particular to know? Material etc...
