Turbo Iron 3.4 is Alive- w dyno #s

My car is running with the turbo now. (See my build thread for all the details and pics of my setup.) Right now it's still running the stock plug gaps and it won't rev past 4800 rpm. The BOV was leaking so we had to delete it for now. It's being tuned on 92 octane.

He has a dynocom dyno and right now it's making 9.5 PSI and peak numbers are 213 rwhp and 243 rwtq. I believe they are SAE corrected and I don't know if the converter was locked or not.
Dyno on same dyno before turbo was 110whp & 160rwtq. this was also before my ported heads and intake manifold.

This car is has the 700r4. so with 22% loss that's about 259 fwhp and 299 fwtq.

I've got a 12PSI spring on its way, and we're going to go colder on the plugs and see what she picks up (if she don't go boom)

If you are partial to AutoLite plugs the 144 is a good choice. Resistor plug with a non-projected tip. Can also run the equivalent NGK plug:

Autolite 144 (resistor non-extended tip)
NGK BR6FS (4323) is a cross to the 144.

RBob.

Thank you. Unfortunately I can't take credit for the tuning. It's being tuned by Swaim Performance Solutions in Eva Al with MSII. I would like to learn some day though.

Thanks for the tip RBob, I know my tuner is a fan of NKGs. I'll see if he wants to run that model.

Thanks Hellhound. I can't wait for it to cool down outside so I can drive it. AC will be a project for another day. the system was designed to keep AC.

here's what we got so far. This is still with the spark blow-out from the stock plug gaps. (has since been fixed) and again this was at 9.5psi.

Re: Turbo Iron 3.4 is Alive- w dyno #s

Nice job glad to see you are still working on the turbo 3.4 set up.

One thing I never did was dyno my turbo v6 engines but I was a racer anyways who really just cared about trap mph and overall et given its weight.

A solid 100-150hp gain is nice for about 10psi. Do you ever thing you may toss a hybrid top end on? Stock iron stuff is fun, and damn near impossible to break imo. But at least you have the option one day to do the swap and really make some major hp.

The best I ever got with my iron heads was a 12.88@104mph and it weighted 3225lbs race weight at that time. Iirc I ran too much boost that time like 16psi. At that point my turbo was undersized, heads were restrictive, and so forth more boost just ment more heat and possible detonation.

Again nice to see some turbo action on here! Keep it up!

Thanks buddy. I haven't even got to drive the car yet. It's still with the tuner, and we're still waiting on a good night for my to bring my 12PSI spring up there and re-run it on the dyno before I pay the man and take her home. I really hope I can be happy with what it is. I spent a lot of time and money on this long block down to the pistons and I can't justify swapping it all out. I've had this car for 15 years and I've always dreamed of having it turbo'd. I should be able to live with that. Especially if she puts down close to 240whp 270rwtq when it's done.

I will take it to the track once or twice to see what it does, but this car will be my baby that I drive to work on Fridays and take down the road to buy some beer before the game on saturday.

Well you are better than me, I say that because I've had my 91 camaro since 2002. It was stock and a daily for many years. Then I had a dream of turboing it. It was so easy to make it run 13s in the 1/4. Arround 300hp or so. But the hp virus is real. Over the next few years I pushed the limits farther and farther. Finally coming to the realization that I was hooked on going faster and faster.

I look back and miss the turbo v6s but at the same time. I know have a all motor 509 9.6:1 pump gas motor in the same car that has about 650hp. Pretty much no maintance, which is nice for once. I'm getting older and constantly keeping the thing going isnt a issue like it was back then when it was one of the wildest v6s on the board.

I love seeing your updates!

What size turbo do you have? Cam size?

I have a GT3582R or whatever it's called. Comp 260H cam. 1.6 comp roller tip rockers. When I picked out this cam (and the shortblock) I never would have dreamed i'd some day turbo the car. I know there's better custom options.

I've had some quick cars in my life already, and i'm scared of putting a car into the wall at the drag strip haha. Probably won't do much racing with any of my babies. I might build a race car later in life.

Cool that same cam turbo combo got me to 12.80s@105mph. In reality that's a alow turbo car but for us its fast and the best part is it's fun. I've had so many bashers over the years even when I was running mid low 11s at 120mph..something like 450hp or a touch more.

Last week at the track I pulled a 1.39 60 foot and ran a 10.37@129mph. When I launch, I use a transbrake 2 step set up so just let off the button. A few times I've got the tire pressure off a bit or my drag bar needed adjusted... let's just say the tires finally sit down about 10-20 foot out and way too close to the wall. I've had some close calls launching it at the track, it's a handful if its not dialed in just right.

For you, having a turbo v6, it's slow off the start and then down track it really takes off. My best 60 foots ever were something like 1.65 or so when my v6 was running mid 11s and even at that, it was a soft take off. I wouldn't worrie too much about racing if you go that route, just follow the safety rules. They are in place for a reason. And have fun.

Re: Turbo Iron 3.4 is Alive- w dyno #s

yeah slow and fast are relative terms. I don't worry with trying to keep up with someone else. I just get out there and enjoy the fruits of my labors.

but if I happen to surprise one of those who said "3.4?! Junk! You need at LEAST a 3800 or 4.3!!" , then that would be great too.

Hey man, I totally agree. There are people who can be content and then there is the gearhead who loves to make hp. Has nothing to do with keeping up with other. Hard to explain but most race engine builders are like this. Man I think it's cool that you did what you did. I guarantee that you can smoke a 3800 na or a 4.3l. Keep it up bub! Ps. We love pics and videos!
