Been running on 5 cylinders for about 3000 miles

It's been a while since I've been on here since my third gens been treating me too well if you ask me. I just discovered after my engine rebuild I forgot to plug in one of the injectors been doing burn outs like that too. Problem I'm having is I had been getting a puff of smoke on start up I thought to be a bad valve seal and I discovered the injector instead. The plug was soaked in oil so I replaced it and the rest were perfect. Car has gained way more power now does burnout with minimal effort but still puffing smoke on start up and very lightly at idle. Checked the plugs after taking her out for a few laps on the highway and they are all nice and clean now but the smoke is still there. I'm hoping its just burning off all the old stuff in the cylinder and it'll return to normal but is there anything I should look for? My fear is having to replace the piston rings in that cylinder.

Check the compression. The "bad" cylinder will either be pretty close or WAY off.

I'll probably check that tomorrow. The car is running great and strong and I never noticed it using oil so hopefully it'll be good if not then I might just drive it as is till i find a good 3.4 low end to rebuild and swap it in.

Only 5 cylinders. Sounds like you have a Volvo.

I just can believe I overlooked that and the funny thing was it was driving just fine minus the smoking that I thought was a valve guide seal. I haven't been able to get to storage to get my compression gauge but I did drive it for about 15 miles today and was smoking when I left, got home and the smoking had stopped. Let it cool started it back up and it was there again. I also had my friend add oil and I just checked it today and its about an inch above the full mark so maybe that's the smoke. Checked plugs again and they are spotless...i'm stumped. Guess I'll know this weekend after the compression test.

Sorry, couldn't resist the Volvo joke.

I doubt the overfilling of oil would cause the smoking. I'd be interested in what your compression check will show. Our 3.1 engines are very, very tough. After all, you drove it 3,000 miles as a 5 banger.

If the compression is good, you might want to pore a third of a can of Sea Foam in the gas tank which might get rid of the crud causing the smoke.

Re: Been running on 5 cylinders for about 3000 miles

Well I got the compression numbers on the volvo 165 psi on all but 1 and 2 which were at 170 so I'm guessing the rings aren't fried and it's valve guides maybe I have an extra set of iron heads pulled from my old fiero in the storage along with a lower intake and manifold plenum that I'm going to attempt porting and polishing, just gotta get some grinding bits for the dremel. Plugs are all still perfect although they are a tad on the white side. Could the ford injectors I'm running be causing a slight lean condition?

Re: Been running on 5 cylinders for about 3000 miles

Those numbers are fine. Every cylinder is within 10% of the others. If you had a bad valve seal or other oil leak into the cylinders, the reading would be around 190. How I know this is because the #6 on my 3.1 heads had oil control problems.

The plugs might not be tan with the engine running perfect. If you do a lot of long distance driving, the ECM is generally programmed to run at about 16:1 at cruise.

Might be an injector pintle not quite seating and letting fuel drip into the engine.
