little help for a question

ok so back in april my car started to act up. took it to my machanic and over the phone he told me it needed a new oil pump, no problem or so i thought. went up there to talk to him about it and and he then proceeded to tell me that my engines bearings are shot and honestly i believe him because at idle the cars fine for about 3 minutes then after that the rpms will go down then when you start down the highway it will bog itself down. Now since the stories done heres my question, my mom has a 1995 camaro coupe that she wrecked and it has a brand new transmission in it hooked up to a 3.4. i plan on putting her engine block into my car but can i put her entire engine in including the transmission. ive read the articles about how to do the swap for a 3.4 and i was just wondering what all i would have to change. i know the simple things like the ecm and harness but what else would go with it. thanks for the help guys

Hi JC,

There ''was'' a thread here somewhere about the 3.1 to 3.4 swap that I did read a while back but I can't find it now. Thought I'd reply as no one else has, so I might not be much help. First of all don't condemn your old engine, are you sure your bearings are shot? Does it make alot of noise from the bottom end? The symptoms you describe could be something more simple and a lot less ££££ than you think. I'd get a second opinion before ditching it.

As far as I'm aware the 3.4 and 3.1 are exactly the same engine basically, and from what I can remember you can bolt it straight up to a TH700 autobox. You'd have to swap over the plenum's as they are the one thing that's totally different. You'll just have to see how you go with other peripherals as to see what needs changing, as I've found there are even slight differences between the 2.8 and the 3.1! My friend had a a 87-88 (i think) 2.8 and that had a MAF sensor on it where mine has just a MAP sensor.
That kind of thing would then dictate which ECM you'd have to use.

Have a look round for that thread, or ask on one of the engine tech boards I'm sure someone will be able to give you the proper low down.

Good luck,

Speed.

Re: little help for a question

thanks speed,
as for my engine it does make some noise coming from the bottom end and in all truth here ive been wanting to do an engine swap with this engine anyways because when i drove it i loved the little more power i got out of it. I dont want to trash my old engine but since i have another 3.1 laying around im going to use both of them to create another engine just incase, and i will check the other boards thanks.

Re: little help for a question

Everything from the 3.4 that is below the intake manifold stays. Except the oil pan. The distributor (remove the oil pump drive from the rear of the block), intake plenums and the fuel rail get swapped from the 3.1.

You cannot use the transmission from the 4th gen without some major rewiring.

Leave your engine control system as it is. It's a direct plug in when you swap over the intake parts. The only parts you will NOT use on the 3.4 are the crank and cam position sensors.

Re: little help for a question

I was able to use the 3.4 oil pan on my swap, just had to switch the oil filter adapter to the 2.8.

edit: motor mounts from AZ, Advance, CSK, blah blah blah. You will not use the 3.4 frame brackets, they weird, reuse the 3.1's
