So I get 3/4 the way there and i'm at a stop light. I pull away and keep going make a turn and bam. Cop lights. Asked me if I knew why he pulled me over. I said no idea. I dont Speed. And use my signals.

Goes to his car comes back with a ticket for 240 for unsafe equipment. Says my car is too loud. and I have 30 days to fix it and bring the receipts to the courthouse....

it probably 40-50 court fee around here, if you fix it they will wave the 60-80 dollar fine but you still have to pay the court fee

I can't fix it. I'm a broke college kid. Im going to fight it. Get decibal readings at my schools shop and get it certified that everything is in working order by my master tech friend... I just think they have too much time on their hands.

Oh and no emissions here in florida either.

I wouldn't do that. I looked it up once and the decibel law was pitiful, like 30 decibels. My mom's Audi A4 will top that. How in the hell is a 3.1 loud enough to draw attention? Is it raspy and annoying like a riced civic?

Re: .... Really cops.

I believe each state is different, Sounds like you need to contest the charges and bring some proof to court with you. Back in the mid 90's same thing happened to me in Oregon. The noise law states 93db is the lowest a car exhaust can be. I went to the local department of motor vehicles and had then record the noise of 91db. I took that to court and didnt have to pay a dime. proof of what mufflers you have how many db noise should work as well and pictures of the muffler or a receipt when they were initially installed.

FYI - I checked the Florida law and found the following:

"(5) NOISE ABATEMENT EQUIPMENT MODIFICATIONS.—

(a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle or any other noise-abatement device of a motor vehicle operated or to be operated upon the highways of this state in such a manner that the noise emitted by the motor vehicle is above that emitted by the vehicle as originally manufactured.

(b) No person shall operate a motor vehicle upon the highways of the state with an exhaust system or noise-abatement device so modified."

This appears to say that, as long as your vehicle meets the decibel level as originally manufactured, your vehicle is in compliance with the noise law. What I would do in your situation is try to find magnaflow manufacturer documentation that says the muffler meets or exceeds OE specs.

Here is the web address where I found the legal info:

Re: .... Really cops.

Another option is to install a couple of cheap bolt on resonators before you go to court. I put one on each exhaust pipe and got a nice low throated tone and also lowered the decibels. Didn't have any noticeable impact on power. Just a thought.

Mine cost $25 each, but there are less expensive ones available. Here is the web address of the ones I purchased:

We researched as well and found the decibal reading by law has to be 75 from 30 feet away. I'm at 72 from 30 feet so I think i've got a case. Its barely legal but still legal.

Re: .... Really cops.

You can Also AFTER you win the case on dB levels alone...sue the cop for false detainment. Then while that case is in court...if you get stopped, you can claim harassment ( file another lawsuit for that) because you are suing them. After awhile the cops will leave you alone for awhile.
I did this to a department when I was in the military. For two yrs no cops would get near my car even if I was stopped at the side of the street with my hazard lights on.

My 5.0 SOHC V8 Mercedes has just short of open headers, I get followed all the time, but never have been ticketed for noise. Must have been a cop who needed to meet the quota.

Re: .... Really cops.

just like a loud stereo system, their are DB laws, but they should have a print out of the DB he meter read at, just like a radard device as proof and so you know what the legal DB level is.

go in and say not guility, you want to take it to trial.

calling their bluff, it will cost them 3 times more then they will get from you. you can then talk to them about a lower fine, but you must say not gulity first to get to do that.

say no contest or guilty, you pay in full +.

Re: .... Really cops.

When you go to court, you are allowed to ask the officer for his evidence that you exceeded the legal Decibel level. If he did not use a meter, then he does not have proof. If you produce written evidence that your vehicle is legal, the judge is likely to find you not guilty. It is wise to be polite and factual. Don't act angry or emotional. Don't verbally attack the officer. No sense pissing off the officer or judge.

you have to make a plea first, they wont even give you a chance to talk. only after saying ot guility, do you then get to talk to someone.

Re: .... Really cops.

One item that is helpful is to go to the same court on a day off, or 2 - 3 hours earlier then your appearance. Sit in the back, keep your mouth shut, be polite.

When the judge asks you why you are there (he/she will), there is only one of two answers. If it isn't your day to appear, the answer is: "I'm just an observer."

If you are early on your day, the answer is: "I have a hearing with you today."

Do not give any other information. You have the right to be silent. If it is the second answer the judge will ask about the case, which can then be used against you. He may even offer a plea bargain. Sit tight until your case is heard.

It is a good education to sit in and listen to others hearings. BTDT, won of few of my own by getting a feel for the system.

Oh, and in closing be sure to ask "that all charges in this matter be dismissed." That is a must. Otherwise you will be found guilty.

You need to move out of **** germany.
Where I live there are lots of mexicans and rednecks that have little to no exhaust on their trucks. They are loud as heck and the only time they get pulled over is when they speed.

Re: .... Really cops.

Check the decibel laws for exhaust.
A state trooper told my buddy it was 96dB for VA. He and I have not been able to look up and verify this.
It makes sense since brand new tractor trailers, older city busses, dump trucks and most trash collector trucks are all about that loud.

New Mexico must not have state exhaust noise laws, there are plenty of cops around here and they are far out numbers by gasoline pickup trucks that have almost no exhaust. These exhaustless pickups have to be going to at least 100dB with out even trying and yet I have never herd of anybody getting a ticket for their exhaust being too loud.

All the cops did is come in and start talking about how they like that style of camaro and asked what it had in it. I told them v6 and they laughed. what she dont know is i know them pretty good lol. So 2 days later i put straights behind my 355. that was two months ago Thake that woman!!!
LOL I like this guy.
Reminds me of my rental property neighbor. A lawn **** with nothing better to do than watch my grass grow and complain when it hits 5". The tennant since moved out and I am mowing once a week (scalping it). Shortest lawn in the town. Nothing to watch at my place now, so I bought a 3 month feed bag of fertilizer and spread it on their lawn. The tables have turned. I now go over and ask when they are going to mow.

Re: .... Really cops.

Loud exhaust.......hmmmmm. I wonder how many motorcycle riders attend court on a daily basis. Now don't take that the wrong way, I have no problem with loud cycles......just saying......certain motorcycles have loud pipes. What I find irritating is these guys/kids who think that good/loud sounding music consists of hooking the biggest amp they can find up to a set of subs while the factory speakers crackle and distort.....hehehe
