Iat cai
Dumb question here. 91 camaro 3.1
I just switched to an all plastic cai with my iat drilled into place through the plastic. Now. Does the iat ground through the threads like a cts? I just put it on 2 weeks ago and now i'm running rich as all hell.

Re: Iat cai
Neither the IAT or CTS ground through the threads... The coolant temp sender (for the gauge or idiot light) DOES. The black wire on both is the ground.

But the iat and cts are 2 lead sensors with a source and signal I thought.

Re: Iat cai
They are fed a voltage signal by the ECM (5V) and the ECM reads the voltage signal as the sensor resistance changes between the input and ground wires.
The difference between the CTS, IAT, and the dash gauge unit is that the dash gauge has the thermistor (temperature-controlled resistor) connected between the signal wire and the body of the sender, whereas the CTS and IAT (and the later 3-wire CTS) have the thermistor connected between the input wire and an output wire.

Hmmm. Alright. Its possible the oil from the filter fouled the sensor. I'm going to try cleaning it. can I use regular brake clean on it?

Re: Iat cai
You can test the IAT sensor for its resistance vs. ohms and compare that to the current temp to see if its close. Google "IAT sensor reisitance chart thirdgen" and youll find the info. Im busy or id look it up really quick for ya...

Re: Iat cai
I would look at the IAT only after exhausting all other options. Oil doesn't interfere with its operation the way it does with the MAF because the MAF actually cooks the oil onto the sensing surface, unlike the IAT.
What you can do is to measure the resistance of both the IAT and CTS to check if they are pretty close to the same when the engine is completely cold.
It's more probable that you had another sensor or some other device fail and that is what is causing the rich condition.

Totally a possibility. I've replaced every sensor 3 months ago though. I could see my o2 sensor going out because I dont have a cat. The cts is Bwd brand and I've heard our engines dont like bwd anything (after I put it in of course)
