3100 top end.
Hi I have a 91 camaro rs 3.1 200k miles. I know from reading all the info and searching like mad that the heads/intake/fuel rail off a later model grand am 3.1 would be awesome for my car. As I've read they are a direct bolt in. the only thing I havn't read is a step by step. Do the fuel lines go in the same place? Temp sensors ? Since this is my daily driver I can't afford to lose her for more than 2 days doing the work myself. Any help?

Re: 3100 top end.
There are no step by step guides for this because very few people have actually attempted it, and each one is different.
The heads and intake will bolt on to the RWD block without any real issues. Some slight trimming of the front cover is needed to clear the lower intake manifold.
The issues arise that you need to use the DIS ignition, and this requires a crank trigger signal. This requires a custom trigger wheel when using the RWD 2.8 or 3.1 block. The best is to start with a 3.4 block that has provisions for the crank trigger. I can attest that it the 3.4 block option is much easier, I've done it both ways.
Exhaust manifolds need modifications where the bolt pattern is concerned, and it it is best to modify tuning in the ECM, since you have a 3.1, a FWD MEMCAL from something like a Cavalier or Beretta can be used, for proper timing settings.
Other hoses and tubes would need modification.
It's not what I consider difficult, because it can be completed using mostly common hand tools, other than a few things like the modification to the exhaust manifolds, where it may be best to use headers, but it can take some time to do, if you're not prepared for it. I would budget at least a week for me to do a basic head swap, for someone less experienced I would say between two weeks and a month.

Hmm. Ill probably find a 3.4 rwd at the scrap yard and take the block and just build it up outside the car including headers and such then just do a swap. Or would that be too complicated?

Can you use the pulleys off the 3.4 or use the ones off the 3400

Re: 3100 top end.
You'll use all the accessory brackets and pulleys from the 3.4.
You can make or buy an external 7x crank trigger to run DIS on your 3.1. That's how us 3500 guys are doing it. Works well.
Not hard to complete but it's going to take time. You'll also need custom length pushrods, they're about $100 or so.
