v6 redline @ WOT?

Me and my buddy were out playing around in our vehicles and we decided to race his lifted 04 frontier against my camaro . I don't usually beat on my car and noticed before it would shift it would redline for a few seconds before shifting. Is this normal? The car runs perfectly when driving normally shifts smooth as well as down shifts smoothly when passing a car. Should I even worry about this I'm planning on some bolt on's and some head work this coming winter and may also be adding 3:73 gears. Would a shift kit bring the shift points down at all? It kinda seems pointless for it to be revving that high since it feels more powerful in the 4k-5k range but I can't keep it there if I get on it.. I have a melling mtc-5 cam if that makes any difference. I plan on getting a delta 260 next..

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

if u have tires that are not the stock size on the rear of the car the shift points will change

ideally with a mostly stock motor u want it to shift around 5,300-5,600

Agreed, what dave said.

In my case my car shifts at 6k out of first to give you a idea that shift points do move arround as your mods do.

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

I'm running the stock tire size right now. The only mods I've done to the car is the cam and valve springs and everything to match the cam. I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Did you ever reset the TV cable??? A idea would be that you did after the engine work and now the cable is set properly and fresh at that.

Yeah I reset the TV cable more than once thinking that could be the problem.

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

Reseting the TV should make the shift points higher. I talked to dana at pro built trans the other day about my 700R4 and he asked my shift point. IIRC he said its normal for the shift to be 5400-5800 rpms when the TV is set correctly.

Ah so it's about where it needs to be then. I've been wondering if the 260 grind would be good for the driving I do. I mainly do city driving but get on the highway from time to time but I want something that will mainly have more low-mid range power.

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

only have to lift off of WOT for a split sec to let it shift when you want then back into it.

easy to learn once you get the hang out of, like shifting gear with your foot as your on and off WOT fast.

the 260 cam is a very very good all around cam its a a nice mid and high rpm boost in power but doesnt do much down low

if u want intown grunt say for stop and go traffic the 252 cam is perfect
it boost the off idle to mid rpm range but it falls off rather fast on the top end

I went out and tried this today on my way to the gas station and I was able to control the shifts

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

I was looking at this cam as a possible second choice http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRS-142006-14/ I would see if delta could grind something similar if I went this route. I like my current cam but the off the line power just isn't there.

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

this is the 252
slightly better then the howards
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-K16-232-4/

delta should have this as an off the shelf grind

a custom grind using the same specs except bumping the valve lift to around .480 would extrend the rpm range and power across the board

with such a short duration the lobe may be kind of steep for a flat hyd lifter and u would need a stiffer spring to control the valve at higher rpms

if delta could grind that 252 with more lift without having to up the duration thats what i would do, delta would be able to tell u if its possible

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

I will have to check that out. With the 252 cam 1.6 rockers would bring the lift up to 0.453/0.453. If delta grind the 252 to .480, would adding the 1.6 roller tip's decrease the low end for more mid-high end power or would I just notice an increase of power in the rpm range? Thanks again

Re: v6 redline @ WOT?

1.6 rockers do add a few degrees duration to any cam ( 2-4) even with that u would still have more low end then the 260

being as u have 1.6 rockers id have them grind the cam to around .460 lift u start running into clearance issues around .500 lift depending on valve springs and what style valve seal u are using
