Would this engine fit ???

Hi all , Got a quick question here . I've got the 89 firebird V6 2.8 as shown in my avatar . Runs great and I just regasketed the engine and tranny . So , this question is just for possible future reference . My daily driver is a 2001 chevy venture van , and on the air plenum it says "3400 SEFI" (or is it just "SFI" with no "E" , I can't remember) . The van is , of course , front wheel drive .

So , , Is this the 3.4 engine that I keep reading about guys installing in place of our 2.8 ? At a quick glance , the valve covers are vastly different , and the oil pan looks very different as well .

My only purpose in asking is that although the van runs great , and is actually quite noticibly faster than the firebird , the van is getting kinda rusty . If I scrap the van , I would save the drivetrain with the harness , computer , and the whole shooting match for a possible future transplant into the firebird if this is in fact the engine that fits . If not , it'll end up junked with the van .

Re: Would this engine fit ???

The easy 3.4 swap is the 3.4 from the 4th gen F-body, since the block itself is set up for being installed in a longitudinal way.

The 3400 can be used, as has been done a couple of times now, but requires custom mounts, and some bell housing modification for starter clearance (starter is mounted on the opposite side of the block in FWD applications), along with a few other details.

The gen 3 660/3400 top end has been used by several people on RWD blocks, myself included, to make installation into the vehicle easier, but get the better flow potential of the gen 3 top end.

It's "3400 SFI" no "E" BTW.

Re: Would this engine fit ???

Thank You for the reply Six_Shooter . Now I know that if the van goes to that great rust pile of my long ago vehicles , there is nothing I'd save from it . If I ever were to replace the firebird's engine , I would want it to be a complete bolt in operation , and that sounds like either the 3.1 or 3.4 from the rear wheel drive car . Makes sense , especially in light of things like the wrong side starter .

I've probablly got a couple of years before the really big pieces of van begin to rot off anyway

And yes , It's most certainly SFI , like you said , , , , I had to put washer fluid in it this am , and I saw the 3400 SFI ....
