New mass airflow sensor, now car runs like crap...
Well the Delco MAF I had bought from third gen ranch finally went bad so I went to the parts store and ordered a new one. Got it put on and the car runs like crap. Its like when accelerating when the rpm reach up to about 3000 it gets sluggish till its in the 4000 range. It won't let my car start without tapping the throttle and it's got me completely confused. I uplugged the MAF and started the car up and in park it accelerates beautifully. With it plugged in it goes back to being hesitant. I had no issues with the old MAF except it was throwing a code and it was causing my car to stall randomly. Junk cardone MAF? When I first got the car it would do the exact same thing and it just randomly stopped. Could this possibly be the ECM?

I still had the stock MAF that made the car backfire through the intake and it runs way better compared to the parts store POS. I'm going to be returning it later today. I'm probably going to do the ford MAF conversion in the near future as I'm getting ready to put DIS in my car soon. This is the second MAF I've gotten from the auto parts store that just won't let the car run properly and the last time it happened I misplaced the receipt and they magically lost the warranty info that they placed under my phone number
Also now that I have a thread started rather than start a new one would anyone know by any chance if I should run my mtc-5 cam with 10* btdc timing or should I bump the timing? Before I got my timing light I had it around 14* or so by ear and it seemed to not feel so sluggish compared to 10*

I don't know how many times I've posted that the parts store (GP Sorenson, A1 Cardone, etc) MAF sensors are useless... I went through 2 in as many years (and after the third, I said "Screw this BS!"). If you're going to get another one, even a used Delco MAF will be better than those parts store POS ones. If you compare the parts store MAF to the Delco (if you still have it), you'll notice the parts store sensor isn't even built the same as the Delco, but it may be in a Delco housing.

That's why after the 1st store bought one I got I just bought a used MAF from third gen ranch. I've compared both and the cardone quality is very poor. Once I get the DIS conversion under way the cardone goes back to the parts store. I'm going to search the classifieds and here and this week check the local salvage yards since I have to go get a few things anyways and if I see any Delco MAF's I'm going to snag em. They are cheap at salvage yards here because there is no guarantee they will work. If I find any good ones I can hold off on the Ford conversion for a little while.

May look on eBay as well... Got a new GM one from there for less than a new Cardone POS. Haven't looked lately, and the seller I got mine from doesn't have any more, and they weren't for Camaros, but it might be worth a look. Also, Ford and newer GM MAFs go for cheap.

Ebay has delco ones for 65 shipped but they have the firebird elbow. Would it be hard to remove the elbow without damaging the sensor?

Depending on how you split the elbow to get it off, yes, you can damage the sensor. The elbow needs to be split enough to crack down to the actual sensor body where the glue is, so it can be peeled off like a banana skin. IIRC, when I cracked the elbow off of one of my Delcos (I had 2, one was junk that came with the car and the replacement was used and didn't last long either), the glue was a little harder to bust.

Went to the parts store today and got the replacement and it wasn't any good right out of the box the housing was cracked so I got a refund and just ordered the delco one for a firebird off ebay and I'm gonna carefully get that elbow off if I can't get it off I may cut the bend off and use a silicone coupling or something but I don't know yet. I guess I'll figure it out once I receive it.
