Alternator wiring question

Gents, I'm just looking to confirm the wiring of my alternator. Motor is a 2.8 V6, I have an after-market Powermaster 2 wire alternator. I cannot remember, is there an additional wire that runs from the post on the back of the alternator to the battery? Other than the 2 wire plug that is? Driving me nuts! Thanks guys!

Re: Alternator wiring question

If it's an 85, like mine, pretty sure there should be a ground wire that runs to the frame or battery in addition to the two you mentioned. It should have a flat tab with like a hole in it, that bolts/screws into the alternator if so.

Thanks for the response! It is an 85. I attached a picture to help explain this. Is there an additional wire that attaches to the gold bolt in the picture and then to the positive on the battery? I 'misplaced' it if there is one....No matter, I'm going with 4 gauge nevertheless. I just can't see the 2 little tiny wires in the white plug charging the battery from the alternator. Thanks very much man!!

Re: Alternator wiring question

Then again, if there is an additional wire it would have to go the a dual battery isolator anyway. I'm almost 99.9% sure I need to add a 'big ol' power wire between the isolator and alternator......

Re: Alternator wiring question

Generally speaking, yes, that post is supposed to have a wire running to battery positive. Otherwise the battery would never charge, since that is the output of the alternator. 4 gauge is ridiculously big, unless you're planning on running a 7K watt sound system or bigger in your car, in which case you'd also need a bigger alternator. 8 gauge is generally more than enough.

You sir are THE MAN! Thank you very much for answering my question! Ironically, I'm running around 10,000 Watts of amplifier power. The alternator is 200 amp and I'm running dual batteries. Thank you again for taking the time to answer my question! I owe you one 'BIG TIME'!!

Re: Alternator wiring question

Don't forget to also upgrade the frame to engine and battery to frame grounds as well when you do this, otherwise there really isn't much of a point. I used 8 gauge here, and was told by my local audio shop that even that might be a bit excessive.

Re: Alternator wiring question

Thanks Maverick H1L! I do believe that you are absolutely correct that 4 or even 8 gauge wire is excessive. I've owned my car since 1993 and have been planning my build ever since. Everything about it is 'Excessive' but not gaudy. It's excessive because It can be. You know what I mean...I do all of the work myself and definitely do it my own way. That's the beauty of owning a 3rd gen baby.

Oh yeah, thanks about the grounds. All of mine have been upgraded and such. Anything else you can think of, PLEASE speak freely. Everything helps. Thanks again man!
