Just a comment on the v6's

So I wrecked my car 92 Camaro almost 5 years ago this thanksgiving. Since then I have started my car about 2 or 3 times before the battery died and I just let it sit, 3 years in a garage the past 2 outside under a tree. So I got the itch to do something with it and saw the turbo builds and thought now is the best time since it isnt my daily driver anymore. So I changed the oil, new spark plugs, rotor/cap and wires. Grab a blem battery at the local battery shop, throw the serpentine belt back on it, give her 3 or 4 cranks and it fires right up. I just want to say I am impressed, its got the same gas in it it had in it 5 years ago, the only difference between it is about $1.50 per gallon.

So anyway just wanted to post on how impressed I am with the engines, if I can find a new hood for this thing it would be back on the road by next week.

Check car-part.com and I'm sure you'll find a hood close by. 60* last pretty long, mines pushing 180k.

this thing only has 70k on it, it sat for probably 10 years before I got it when my brother wrecked it at a much greater speed than I did. So over all the engine is great, but the front end has taken quite a beating. haha

hmmmmm 180,000 miles...i guess i have alot of time left on this motor then. Mind as well let the good times roll and keep up on the repairs. Im just hoping this motor stays with me long enough for me to have more money coming in my pocket to afford something bigger and better

The five year old gas was probably "real gas" not this ethanol BS we run today......

Ah, right. After having it for about a year, we kicked ethanol out for all of its crappy disadvantages. Its pretty hard to find e10 now.

My old 3.1 had around 220k on it before I pulled it. Was running, but had a slight knock in it which was an out of round cyl hole.

I bought it after sitting I think 3 or 4 years he said. I had to sand all the rust off the dist "crowns", Put in new plugs, wires, cap/rotor, batt... then let it crank a few times and it fired. Drove it to my then g/f's house with only 1st and 2nd, and no brakes (that was fun).

Do you guys have any tips on antying that you may think might go bad on this car from sitting for 5 years, I backed it in and out of the spot today, seemed like the brakes were having trouble keeping the car stopped, the engine in idle was almost causing the car to move with my foot pressed down pretty hard so might check out the brakes but beside that what can i check.
also how can i check on how well the car is tuned, do i need to check compression? or anything else, I am having trouble understanding how you know when a car is in tune or out of tune besides obviously the car is running poorly, or difficulty starting or stalling alot anything i can check without running into problems first?

Unless someone has been messing with the ECU then the tune is exactly as it left the factory.

If you mean dose the car need a "tuneup" in the traditional sense then yes it dose. Standard items are air oil and fuel filter, plugs wires cap and rotor.

Check and change all fluids ie motor oil trans fluid brake fluid ( a flush is a good idea for both) coolant and differential fluid and the AC charge.

Look under the car for any rotten, or oil soaked rubber components and replace or upgrade as needed, get the car off the ground and check the suspension and steering for any play. Balljoints and tie rods need to be maintained or the car will be wrecked again.

Motor and trans mounts, dry rotted tires, serpentine belt, coolant hoses, damper, shocks and struts.


Then there are items that wear out and are often dammaged.

If the car still runs bad it's time to start diagnosing, the MAF sensor TPS, IAC motor, MAF sensor, coolant temp and oil pressure senders fuel pressure regulators and injectors all can go bad with time.

90-92 injectors are crap and tend to go bad.



I had the same issues you describe after buying my TA. It sat for 2 years in a barn.

Infact it was so bad that while sitting in drive with the brakes locked the rear wheels would slowly turn against the ground! If my front end was in gravel or dirt the car would not stop.

I have yet to do anything about the brakes as the car has been in storage most of the time but the majority of the issues I had came down to the injectors. They leaked so bad that the pressure dropped to 0 within 5-6 seconds with the motor off.

The ohms were all over the place as well with only one being even close to spec, I replaced them with Ford racing 24 lb-hr injectors from summit.

A leaking FPR diaphram can cuase a similar condition but I dont know if the V6 has the same style.
