My NOx emissions fail fix 3.1 v6 1991 Camaro
I failed the emissions test; about twice too much NOx. Then my car gave a code 32 for EGR failure AFTER I failed the emissions test. I replaced the EGR valve and gasket, replaced the EGR mount steel flexible tube to plenum gasket where it meets the plenum, replaced the other EGR mount steel flexible tube to plenum gasket where it meets the EGR mount as it was missing, replaced a short section of brittle vacuum line behind the plenum, used aerosol carb cleaner and a small screwdriver to clean tons of gook out of the plenum where the EGR mount steel flexible tube meets the plenum, replaced the electrical connector from the EGR valve to the wiring harness (EGR sensor connector. Got it from rock auto part 514pt301, Delco part pt301 (napa part 12102614 as I recall has the wrong part attached to the pt301 part number – that is why I had to get it from rockauto http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=251568 ). The connector looked like it had been ran over by a lawnmower and one pin was not connecting to the EGR.
.
I changed the oil, ran two cans of seafoam through per the seafoam video http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...90865726229173 , put a can of CRC "Guaranteed to Pass" in the fuel tank, replaced the oxygen sensor valve, ran about three gallons of tap water through the engine (placed a rubber hose in a bucket and the other end of the hose to the power brake vacuum line) to clean carbon out of the engine (though some fuel injector makers said do not run water through them, mine still work fine). I plugged the PCV hose with a golf tee and backed timing off two degrees. My fuel injectors and IAC had been changed to allow the car to start by a shop about two months before the emissions test.. The car would crank, run a second and die. Several months before this the car would start, run a second and die and the shop changed the fuel pump and filter to fix it. I passed the emission test and the car idles better now when it is warm or hot, than it used to– will have to see what happens when I change back to 10 degrees TDC from 8 degrees TDC. http://www.auto-repair-help.com/ was very helpful and instructive as was this site and many others. Thanks for all the info guys.
