Ballast required for Mallory Hyfire 6A?

Kinda new with this.....can anyone tell me if a ballast is required for a Mallory Hyfire 6A ignition controller? 1985 2.8L with FI.

Didn't have one previously and the ignition box fried. Now, with the ballast installed, the controller will only turn on (with the ignition on) and unplugging the 2 wire connector to the dizzy and then plugging it back in. Then presto, power to ignition controller. Triple checked the wiring and it's correct. Stumped here!

Any help is appreciated!
