Automatic/Manual question.
Am I crazy or do autos have less power to the ground than a 5 speed by far? I remember driving with my dad in his 3.1 5 speed standard and it was so much faster, or so it seemed. Even when I shift up through first mine still seems slow :|
So here's my question:
Should I do a manual tranny swap (i have the parts car and what not I'm just worried about the clutch assembly going in right), or get a shift kit for my automatic? Or am I just crazy and don't know what the hell I'm talkin about?

Re: Automatic/Manual question.
depending on the auto tranny (some are worse than others) typical losses are 20% to 25% in an auto and around 15% to 10% in a manual tranny.
5 speed cars are just more fun... and get better gas mileage!

Re: Automatic/Manual question.
yea they are....i love my 5 spd. but they are garbage(so ive heard) so im on the hunt for a 350/ t56 (a timely hunt so i save enough along the way )lol
but i have to dissagree w/ the better gas mileage as my 5 spd provokes my gas pedal to stay on the floor lol
but i can spin most of the way through 2nd on a dry day and chirp 3rd on a rainy one (do that with your 3.1L auto)

Yeah I can't chirp my auto on a dry day, no way in hell. I'll talk to some people about the tranny swap, I do like driving manuals as long as first isn't a mean gear =P couple of my friends cars you have to drop the clutch cause its super super super sensitive.
But yeah parts are ready to go for the most part, i have an 89 5 speed with a working tranny if i really wanted it =) I think i'll wait for mine to die a bit before i do it though, probably next spring.
oh and about gas mileage, i get some good mileage off of mine, single tank can take me 250 miles or so, maybe more. But i have to agree, driving around town at 35-45 in 5th saves so much gas
