Simple Performance Upgrades?
Hi all,
I have an Automatic 1989 Camaro RS 2.8L and I have a couple questions. What are some simple performance upgrades? I am not too mechanically inclined meaning it'll be very difficult to work with major engine upgrades like changing the cam or modding the piston heads...
If I change my stock air filters into K&N, how can I increase the airflow that passes through them? I read somewhere that you can drill 1/4" holes, but I forget exactly where you would drill those holes...
I also plan on putting a Flowmaster 80 Series single in/dual out muffler...
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

look in the tech articles i believe, you can drill the holes in the boxes, or some of us have actually cut the bottom right off the box, it opens up the air flow more in the upper rpms. i guess it depends on where you live and if you plan on puddle jumping. i dont drive mine in the winter or even the rain much anymore so i dont have a problem. but even when i did drive it in the rain and snow, as long as i didnt go through any big puddles or anything i never had a problem w/ cutting the bottom of the air box off.

It's your best friend. This question has been asked a million times. There is plenty of info on this board, you just have to be willing to go out and find it.

I did search! And it wouldn't load the message board... Guess there were too many threads on performance upgrades? Or my internets is broke...
Another question, my car is idling at ~1500rpm, and sometimes for reasons unknown, it slowly jumps up to 2000rpm... I don't think this is normal

Anyway, just remove the air deflectors in your airbox if all your doing is daily driving it. Just throwing a muffler on it doesnt do near the performace of replacing the whole catback system. You wont spend to much more getting a whole boltin catback as if you would paying a shop to just install a new muffler.

The problem you will run into with the easy upgrades is that the power gains will be little to none depending on what you do. If the car isnt your daily driver your best bet will be to get a manual like a "Haynes" and learn as you go. Most people arnt certified mechanics, we learn by doing. If you think your in over your head send me what you want as far as HP and torque specs that you want and I'll get the parts lists together and tell you exactly how to do it.

You could do the coolant bypass mod, build scoops for your intake (if you have the one that draws in front of the radiator, or some other free mods that are to be found in the site somewhere.
