Please help! Alternator doesn't work

Hi,

I need your help. I have a 89er 2.8 Firebird.

I was driving and then noticed, that my Battery voltage was going down. It was about 9 Volt. I still could drive, but wiper, blinker an so on doesn't work. My first thought was a broken alternator. Unfortunately my local dealer for US-Parts has no alternator in stock, so I bought a used one from the junk yard.

I changed the alternator, but it still doesn't charge. Today I checked the following.

First I charged the battery. On the connector I have two cables, a red one and a brown one. Both cables have 12 volt, and the thick black cable at the back of the alternator has also 12 volt. So I think, that there is no open in my cabeling. When I start the engine, the voltmeter shows the same as when the car is off and only ignition is running. When I drive, there is also no change of the Voltmeter.

No I think, that the new alternator is also broken.

Am I right, or is there something, I didn't notice in the wiring diagrams?

Pleas help me fast, because we have our big annual Firebird meeting at the end of the week, and my Bird won't fly. And I don't want to buy another alternator, just to see, that it won't help, because I have overlooked something.

Thanks in advance.

Andreas

If you can stilldriveit, just take it to autozone or another auto store. They will test you stuff for free. Could be a bad battery. Once they go bad they don't charge at all but maybe you got a bad cell in the battery which wont let it charge any more than that?

Yeah, mine isn't taking a charge. When I took it out, looked like there was rust all over the metal. And it was flaking off. Can't be good

Hi all,

a few additions from my side:

Andy (supabird) is living in the neighborhood just a few miles away.

We've checked the battery and it's ok. The battery can be charged with a separate charger and also holds the charge.

If you put the battery back in the car and drive it there is NO CHANGE of the voltage, the voltmeter always gives the same reading (12 volts) and after two hours the batt is empty.

As Andy mentioned the alternator has been replaced and the cables have been checked.

Did we forget to check something???

Thanks for your help

Jens

Hi again,

now its running. The "new" alternator was broken too.

@Gumby
Yes, they test it for free. Thanks fort the tipp. My wife drove the Bird to our local Car Electric store, and they told us, that all cables are OK, and we didn't forget anything.

An hour ago, I bought a new alternator, and my bird is flying again.

Thanks for your help.
