Finally Got the 3.1 In...

Oh Boy!!!! I got my 3.1 in this past weekend and I am happier than a pig in sh*t. I didn't think there would be THAT much of a difference. Maybe it's because my 2.8 was shot, but I love my 3.1 . I still need to get the new o2 sensor in, but it runs like a champ. Still stalls at idle every once in a while, but I was told that was because of the sensor. Also, I get the "Service Engine Soon" light on, but I hear thats familiar with engine swaps until the computer resets itself to the correct settings. Is my fuel gonna run lean or anything. Any input would be nice. Thanks...

The SES light is on
BECAUSE THERE IS A PROBLEM.
You should be able to download any codes for problem solving easily IF ya did most everything correct.
Good for you.
PS it took me many miles to solves alot of my swap things.
Good luck BE PATIENT.

Are you running with a messed up O2 sensor, or without it hooked up? The O2 sensor will cause you to throw a code if it's acting way out of normal...but when it's malfunctioning, it usually won't throw a code, just make you run rich or something. I'm not familiar with how the computer behaves with doing a swap between a 2.8 and 3.1...they should have very close maps and such. In my experience after replacing a sensor or anything, I've always needed to manually reset the computer or else the car will throw SES codes that don't make sense, and run generally funny. You can either pull the ECM fuse for 30 secs to do this..there's more to it but I doubt the fluff and stuff is necessary, or just leave the neg. battery terminal off for 30 secs. I do the battery because my ECM fuse APPARENTLY has nothing to do with my ECM... Many months ago, I learned to not ask about things like this for my car, because none of it will ever make sense. I think my car was hand-assembled by some Guatemalan idiot...

BTW, 5 hp and 15 ft. lbs feels better than you'd think, doesn't it? Now I'd like to get my hands on one of those beautiful 3.4's....mmmmm....

Still stalls? check the IAC, and make sure you've got good compression in all the cylinders... also, the SES light will stay on until you get the O2 sensor! When you put it in, disconnect the neg battery terminal for 30 seconds, then plug it back up, and drive off.

If you still get the SES light, with the O2 sensor plugged in, post back here!

BTW, disconnecting the negative terminal resets the entire ECM, not just the trouble codes..which means the car has to re-learn everything. Not to mention you're gonna lose all your precious radio presets.. And after you reset the ECM and start the car, expect it to stall. Mine does every time..stalls once and reeks heavily of gas...just start it again and it'll run fine. Take it through its paces..idle, part throttle, full throttle...the computer has to be run in all of these before it'll know how to calibrate itself for best performance. Mine runs same as usual after that stall but sometimes it can take up to a day or two for the car to run completely normal again.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but I must point out one more time - I am new to all of this so bear with me. What exactly is the "IAC"? I'll be happy to check it as soon as I find out what it is and where it's located. Tomorrow I am getting the sensor (right now I am running without one ), and I am putting in a tranny cooler as I have the in & out tranny lines running into eachother doing absolutely nothing. I figure if I am doing these things, I might as well check the "IAC". Anyway, if you are even interested in why I am not cooling my tranny, let me know - what a story. Thanks for the help.
