To ANY V6 who would like MORE INFO on eprom burning for V6 cars

I have just fired off an e-mail to TunerCat asking them to develop a TDF for 2.8 and 3.1 V6 F-body cars. I noticed they have added some TDFs for late 80s 3.8 Pontiac/Buicks and 2.8 Fieros. I know some of you V6 owners were disappointed when you came to the DIY Prom Board wanting to learn how to burn eproms. Only to find out that there is nothing for you.

So here is a copy of the e-mail I JUST sent to TunerCat. I strongly suggest that ALL V6 owners send TunerCat a similar e-mail to: tc@tunercat.com and hopefully there will be a TDF so you can begin editting your eproms too.

Many of the things we have learnt on the DIY Prom Board is directly applicable to V6s. It's just the location in the eprom that we don't know. If TunerCat makes a TDF for 3.1s and 2.8s, then you will be able to do the same things the V8 guys do.

Here's a copy of the e-mail for your reading:
Hi Guys:

I hope you remember me, but I’m Glenn91L98GTA, a moderator on the DIY Prom Board at www.thirdgen.org

I’ve noticed that you have been busy adding improving TDFs and adding new TDFs. I notice some 3.8 V6 TDFs for Pontiac/Buicks and even a 2.8 TDF for Fieros. On the DIY Prom Board, I am ALWAYS saddened when I tell one of the 2.8 or 3.1 V6 F-body guys that want to get into eprom burning that there is no TDF from TunerCat for them. For the 3.1 guys I have suggested looking at modifying the $8D (SD TPI) bin and changing the “Cylinder Select” to V8 and working with that. But many would like their V6 Bin because it revs much higher and probably the tables support higher RPM limits. Also, there are settings that are unique to V6s. Lastly, this does nothing for the 2.8 V6 MAF guys. I really have to sympathize with the poor V6 guys.

You have a LOT of V6 guys at www.thirdgen.org that would love to get into eprom burning but they have no alternative. I understand that there is now a WinBin ECU for the 3.1 guys but WinBin is so cumbersome to use and only has some of the tables and constants defined. Unless someone ADDS a new constant or table and shares it, there are no updates. I know the good work you guys do and how you constantly are improving the existing TDFs. I just wish you could do the same for the V6 guys.

PS: I understand that you have made another improvement to the $8D. Can you e-mail me the latest update?

Best regards,

Glenn Matus aka Glenn91L98GTA
Now GO E-MAIL TUNERCAT and say "YES, MAKE US A TDF". And maybe you can finally enjoy the full benefits of burning your own eproms and getting max performance, gas mileage and driveabiltiy. The more of you that e-mail them, the better the chance that they'll do something for you.

No, let's cross our fingers and hope TunerCat is willing to work with us. The eprom is a major requirement IF you want to make some serious power and right now, as I see it, it's a key part that's missing.

But let's all cross our fingers that TunerCat is willing to dig into the 2.8 & 3.1 eproms for F-bodies. I will keep you all posted.

CHD, can you e-mail it to me. I know TunerCat will want AS MANY Bins that I can give them. Also, I would be curious to run a "binary compare" to the $8D AUJP Bin...just to see if the program itself is the same.

Also, if you know the BCC of the bin and specific car it came from, that would be good info.

Also a "nice e-mail" to TunerCat "encouraging" them to develop a these V6 TDFs would help.

Now, does anyone have a 2.8 MAF V6 Bin for the "302"?

On the way.. I believe its from a 92 5 speed.

I think it even has the $88 mask...

GREAT NEWS. Tunercat is interested. But, like I suspected they need some bins. CHD has sent me a 3.1 BIN (Thanks Joe) and I may have a lead on a few more BINs for 3.1 V6s.

But if ANY of you have any more BINs, please forward them. The more, the better. Especially ANYTHING for the 2.8 V6s. There still seems to be nothing for that. If any of you live near in the West Coast, I will be happy to take my "Prom Burner" and read the bin off your Memcal.

BTW, here's a copy of what TunerCat said:
Hi Glenn,

It's good to hear from you again. Hope everything is going well. Let us know what V6's you think we ought to work on and we'll see what we can do. If you can send us some calibration files, that would also help.

Attached is a zipped file containing the latest version of the Definition File(s) you requested, along with the current FormLib file.

To install the updates, unzip these files into you Tuner subdirectory, over-writing the old files.

Please note you need to be running the current version of the Tuner program (version 1.73) to use these updated Definition Files. If you are running an earlier version of the Tuner program, you can download the current version from our 'Downloads' page.

Best Regards,

TC
Now, go and send TunerCat an e-mail at tc@tunercat.com encouraging them to develop the TDFs for the 2.8 and 3.1 V6 cars. This is our chance to finally get something happening for V6 cars.

BTW, I will be gone on vacation starting today for 1 week, so if you send me an e-mail or wonder what's happening, I won't be able to respond until after July 4th.

Quick hurry, someone send the 2.8 bin.

bin. is just a txt type file that the prom chip reads. like a small program.

I would say something similar to a .bat file, a program that you edit by txt but for the prom. which is very similar to a bios chip , which also use bin files when you upgrade your bios.

just as important, upgrading your prom bin and your computer bios bin. both can make improvments in performance.

Yes. I still have not gotten a 2.8 bin.

I've been doing some "junk yard scrounging" and discouvered many late 80 2.8s in Cavaliers and Corsicas also use the 7730 with MAP sensors.

I am also noticing the 3.1 Cavalier wiring harness is very close to the harness pin connection to SD TPI V8s. But I can see why you V6 guys would like to retain your $88 Bins. There are "pins" on the V6 harnesss that are not used on the V8 harness.

I am going to investigate those "pins" for input/output potential with the SD V8s (can you simply set them to be active and have them work for a V6)? Or can I reuse them for "other things" maybe an "input signal" to indicate an NO2 switch is armed, or an output to control the second fan (that currently only the switch in the head uses).

But this investigation is leading me to other "interesting" discoveries that I may be able to use in the future when I get back into "source code".

But PLEASE send me a 2.8 MAF bin

I don't have a copy of my bin but if anyone wants the CHIP to make a copy (and return), I would be happy to donate it to the Cause. The chip is from my 86 Auto. I had to get a 5-speed chip from GM after I did the tranny swap.

If I had an EPROM reader I would do it myself but I I have neither the time or $$ to do it now. Maybe once school starts...

For V6 F-bodies it appears that the $88 calibration is used for the later model 7730 SD V6s and $3A calibration for the older 302 MAF V6s. Sorry Denis, but there is nothing for the $6D variety (yet).

TunerCat has JUST developed TDFs for both the $88 and $3A calibrations. They have authorized me to select a couple of people to "beta test" each version. I currently have a couple people already selected for the $88 (Thanks Joe).

But I STILL need someone with the older 302 MAF V6s to "beta test" this calibration. If anyone has an older MAF V6 F-body that has access to eprom burning equipment, please have them get in touch with me. But you MUST have the eprom burning equipment or access to it AND a MAF V6. TunerCat has enough "desktop testers"...they now need ACTUAL "hands on" beta testers to determine if there is any problems.

It doesn't matter if you have a licenced copy of TunerCat at this time as you can download a copy of the TuenrCat software and use it for 30 days for FREE.

But this is a chance for any of you MAF V6 F-body users to actually modify your OWN EPROM and test it.

Conversely, if you live close to me in the Kamloops area you can contact me personally. Also, Joe, if you are willing to work with some MAF V6 user, please state that you are willing to help and specify your locatoin.

And, thank you TunerCat for listening to the V6 F-body users and offering a solution for them to modify their eproms.
