Posi Unit & Ring & Pinion Vendor Preferenece

Any one vendor better than the other when selecting a posi unit and gears? Looking to buy through Summit and I see Yukon, Motive and Richmond offer a good selection. Car has stock 5.7 auto and just a cruiser so really just looking for something quiet. Recommendations on 3:23 vs 3:42? Thanks

For the posi, use a worm-gear one such as a Torsen or Eaton Truetrac.

For gears, any of the high-quality brands will do. Dana/Spicer, US Gear, Precision, Superior, Motive, Richmond NOT the "drag race" kind, etc. Make sure the country of origin is US, Canada, somewhere in Western Europe (Germany, Italy, France, etc.), Japan, Korea. Avoid ones made in China, India, Turkey, Eastern Europe, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. I'd suggest 3.42 although 3.23 would probably be OK with better than a stock converter. You'll probably have to deal with speedo gears.

This is what I have. 3,000 miles no issues. I like my 323 gears. 1950 rpm at 60mph. They have 26 or 28 spline set ups. Fast shipping.

The Yukon posi is a clutch type. In 2024, I would use a worm-gear unit, not a clutch one. Although of course the clutch kind was all there was for many many years, and that one is a decent one. But the worm-gear type is altogether better.

I should also mention, stock axles are CRAP and probably worn out besides. The deal with those is, the axle IS the inner race of the bearing; the bearing rides DIRECTLY ON the axle. Therefore if the bearings are worn, which of course they ALWAYS are like all the other bearings in a rear end after however many miles without changing the fluid, the butter-soft stock axles are also bad. Besides just wear, they often are bent, from hitting a curb at some random time in their life. (you might be surprised at how light of a curb hit it takes to do serious damage to axles) They're not too $$$, so they should be replaced as part of a project like this.

Thanks again for the response. Any idea on where I can get axles that fit rear disc brakes? I read some of the reviews on Summit and folks were saying they wouldn't fit the flange on discs?

Not sure about the disc brake fitment thing. The wheel flange on some axles is slightly too large to fit inside some rotors; it would be easy to have a local machine shop turn a small amount off of their OD if that's the case. Not all axles have that issue, and even ones that have had it in the past, might have fixed it. Personally I have a set of Superior axles and they fit my PBR brakes (91 or 92 rear in my 83 L69 Z28) and they fit fine but Superior no longer makes axles. Mine are from around 25 yrs ago.
