Transmission part. What is it & where does it go.

91 Z28 700R4. Transmission disassembly. Transmission on side upside down. When I pulled out the low/reverse clutch assembly I heard it fall and it was laying right in front of the low/reverse piston. It is slightly concave, (running up & down) at this view. Only one shiny mark on it as seen. I have looked at every diagram I can find but none of them show this part neither does any utube I looked at. Any ideas??? Do I need it? If so how is it positioned?

That sounded like it so I googled "case saver" THAT'S IT. Thank you so much. No just to figure out how it's positioned. I will be talking to Pro Built in a week or so and will ask him about it and about the anti clunk spring. Thanks again.

You're welcome, sorry it took so long. I read your post last night before I fell asleep and forgot about it until this morning

I found where it goes. There's a mark on the case. It lays right in there just as nice as can be. Thanks again.

This is one of three different versions of what is called a "case saver". This takes the place of the "anti clunk" spring. This should only be used when the aluminum case lugs are very worn.

Re: Transmission part. What is it & where does it go.

Post an Image of the Empty Case, so we can see the Case Lugs.

-If the Lugs are Bad, time for a new case.
-If the Lugs are good, time to find an Original Anti-Clunk Spring.

Those Case Savers should only be used as a Temporary "Band-Aid" to keep the Vehicle Going until the next Transmission Rebuild.

The first pic (right side of case) is the worst by far but I think a file will take out the marks. The left side are light marks. And the bottom is barely noticeable.

Re: Transmission part. What is it & where does it go.

My eyes are not the greatest... so help me here...

I see some grooving from the Steel-Plates of the Low-Reverse Clutch (Not terrible if I see it correctly).

The "Case-Saver" is for Case Lug Wear and Tear in the area of the Cast-Iron Support with the One-Way Roller-Clutch.
(Look good from what I can see).

I would probably do some clean-up/ smoothing, and Use the OEM Spring.

Let some others look at the Photos too, and share their opinion

I was hoping you'd say that. I did some filing on areas that needed it and they look pretty good. Like he said, more opinions wanted.
