Z bar to hydraulic clutch conversion

I have an 83 Z28 that I am restoring. I don't like how the z bar feels to drive, much prefer the hydraulic clutch in my e46. I'd like to update my car to the 84+ hydraulic setup. I know I need the hydraulics, pedals, and bellhousing; but I am currently doing the floor pans would like to make all of the modifications to the lower firewall at the same time. Will the clutch master go in the same mounting location as the z bar linkage goes through the firewall? If not, does anyone have measurements?

Re: Z bar to hydraulic clutch conversion

I have an 84 in my shop at the moment. Earlier, I was comparing its hydraulic system to my 83's mechanical. The master cylinder mounts in the same hole where the 83's clutch rod goes through. There is, however, a brace that attaches to the engine side of the firewall on either side of the cylinder. On the interior side two more braces attach to the same points and then bolt to the pedal hanger. It's easier to refer to the attached photos. You can see the rusted interior braces bolted to the cylinder and go upward to their attachment points. I would imagine the holes on either side of the cylinder needs to drilled.

This may work out for me then. If the master goes in the same place, hopefully I can use the '83 pedals to line it up for now. Otherwise, I'll have to source a set of 84+ pedals soon.

Re: Z bar to hydraulic clutch conversion

The hole is in the same general area but it needs to be modified for hydraulic conversion. It's an oval opening rather than round. The
pedal support and clutch pedal are different between mechanical and hydraulic. The brake pedal is the same. Probably best to buy
an entire '84-'92 pedal assembly.
