26 spline to 28 spline axles

91 Z28. According to all the codes it should have posi differential and being a 91 it should have 28 spline axles. It has neither. It's an open diff. with 26 spline axles. I'm wondering if someone changed the complete rear end?? Any way, if I put a true track carrier with 28 splines & axles with 28 splines will there be any problem? It should all bolt up correct? The outer axle bearings should fit the housing? I will be replacing all the bearings and gears. Thoughts?

Upgrade is nice but it's still a small ring and pinion. That's where I've had most of my issues. Ripping teeth off the gears.

How much HP do you have and what kind of driving do you do? Drag strip? Track? Lots of burn outs? Thanks

Yes you can install 28-spline carrier and axles. Housing is the same, all bearings are the same. Fits right in no problem.

Given that the 26-spline axles were discontinued some years before your car was built, sounds like there's been some swappage downgrading in its past. Maybe somebody tore the original up, maybe they got better gears, who knows now. But it's not original.

I thought so just wanted to be sure before I order things.

Again that's what I was thinking. RPO codes says 323 gears and that's what's in it now. Just curious what year rear end housing is? Don't know if that matters. I can't find any other numbers on the housing.

Re: 26 spline to 28 spline axles

I found some stamped numbers on the front side of right axle housing but I can't find a listing of what the codes represent. I'm looking for what year it is. Any help?

Re: 26 spline to 28 spline axles

Doesn't really matter. They're all the same.

What matters, if you're going to spend money on it, is what brakes it's set up for. If it's the cast-iron DMs, or drums, I wouldn't spend a dime on it. The pumpkin casting # is the same for all brake systems BTW since those are out on the other end of the tubes which are separate pieces from the center casting. Unless it's the DMs and you're willing to throw that crap in the trash and buy something else to put on it that might actually WORK occasionally.

Re: 26 spline to 28 spline axles

They are drums. Looks like now is the time to do the LS1 brake upgrade. Unless you suggest something else?

That's about as good as anything. Better than most I suppose, not least because parts are cheeep, plentiful, and widely available.

Re: 26 spline to 28 spline axles

According to the 6HK code, it should be a 2.73, limited slip with cast iron drums. RPO GU2

Since it no longer is, someone has been in there, not unusual figuring how long these cars have been around.

Upgrading it won't hurt.

RBob.

Re: 26 spline to 28 spline axles

I put 28 spline axles in my 84 only issue I had was the hub would not fit under a 1984 rear rotor I had to turn them down I used a 28 spline yukon posu. Your car should not have that issue
