12 bolt rear end identification and brakes

Hello all, I am in need of some info and advice. I have a 1984 Z28 that I've had for 26 years. There isn't a whole lot that hasn't been replaced or upgraded along the way. One of the things I upgraded was the rear end..at some point many years ago I was able to find a 12 bolt rear with 3.73s and a posi that came out of a thirdgen thus was able to bolt directly into mine with no modifications Inc the torque arm. I left the drum brakes as is since they were in good shape at that time. I now want to either simply replace the drums and shoes or perhaps upgrade to rear disks. Problem is I don't know the origin of the rear so I don't know if I am getting the correct parts. I did a search and all I found was that a GM 12 bolt would take massive work to get it to work with our cars. So either I have some Frankenstein rear or lucked into an aftermarket one for our cars. Problem is still, I don't know what it is. Are there codes, markings, anything external that would point me the right way. And also, for a weekend warrior that may never see a track again, are rear disk brakes a worthwhile thing to do?
Big thanks in advance!

Re: 12 bolt rear end identification and brakes

Photo might help.

You are correct, no GM 12-bolt exists for these cars. No "Frankenstein" even. It has to be aftermarket, especially if the stock TA fits it. There's only acoupla possible vendors... Currie, Mark Williams maybe, maybe Moser. Might want to visit their web sites, look at the logo, see if you spot anything similar on yours.

Yes disc brakes would be a worthwhile upgrade for any street type use IMO. Not so much for track use maybe though. Question then would be, what kind can you get that will fit it. Again, photos may help.

Post a few pictures.
moser makes one and so does strange. Moser will have fabricated spring perchs and panhard mounts, strange used factory appearing stamped pieces. Thats a start.

Re: 12 bolt rear end identification and brakes

I will hopefully be able to get under the car tomorrow. I wanted to ask first so I would know if there was anything I specifically needed to look for. Thanks for the info.

Re: 12 bolt rear end identification and brakes

I was able to crawl under there and get a couple pics. I wasn't sure exactly what to focus on that would be helpful but here are a few. I also looked but didn't find anything that would indicate a particular company. There were a couple of places where some numbers were cast into it but most are impossible to read. If there is anything specific I could get a Pic of to help I could try again tomorrow. Thanks again!
