What company to buy a 700R4 from?

I have read reviews about the horror stories with Monster and Mad Dog.

What company is recommended? B&M. TCI, Patriot, etc.

It seems that Pro Built just sells kits and not complete transmissions?

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

Bowtie Overdrives - I've had two of them and they've been bullet proof.

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

I went with bowtie overdrives as well. It gets expensive when you start adding shipping, core, torque converter, and speedo gears but it was the best shifting 700r4 I personally have ever had. I had them up the shift points in the governor and it was spot on every shift. Nice and firm too in ALL shifts not just the 1-2 shift. I think they just have those transmissions figured out and know what to modify properly. I wasnt happy with there cheapo stock pan with a temp port welded on (it leaked at weld btw) so I changed it out with a nicer aluminum moroso pan with temp port and drain plug. I heard they got bought by another company a year or 2 ago. Hopefully that hasn't affected build quality that sometimes happens when new owners try to save a buck.

Does Pro-Built have transmissions or just rebuild kits?

Yep, they sell transmissions. Call Dana and tell him what you need, he'll take care of you.

Pro
Built
Automatics

for sure. they did a great job on mine

Sometimes Dana is hard to get a hold of via email, might be best to call him. I reached out to him twice in December via email and no reply, but I am in no rush. Just a tech question abotu my rear gear swap and ratio. I might have to call him instead of emails.

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

Go with Pro Built Automatics!

Dana has done all the research needed to build the best THM700-R4s and 4L60Es PERIOD!
Give Dana a call at: 909-795-1876 or 909-435-5360... this would be better than E-Mailing him.

As a long time GM Engineer for the Hydra-Matic Division; I can say that:
Where GM left-off, Dana continued and has these transmissions worked-out perfectly!

You won't regret it!!!

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

let me know if you are able to get in touch with Dana guys, I sent him two emails and left him a voicemail Monday night too. Hoping to hear from him in the next few weeks before I order my rear gears. I just simply want to run some math/specs past him.

I speak to him all the time...

I spoke to him today, yesterday, and the day before.

NOTE: If he is working on a project for you... He prefers to contact people back when he has news or an update for his customer.

Otherwise: call him in the afternoon or evening time PST (he is in California).

yup, I know. he has always told me to call late at night. Thats what I have usually done.
I'll try again in a few days. It is not urgent, but just some thoughts ona rear gear ratio change and he is on my list of go-to drivetrain experts that i like to consult with.

I would be happy to try and answer any questions you have.

I was a Power-Train Engineer for General Motors for many years... and I am one of the people that Dana goes to when He has questions.

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

awesome! that is good to know!

I don't want to change the topic away from the original poster's questions on this thread, so I'll just give a link to page #5 on my build thread where I discuss my intentions to get the car a bit more "wicked up" changing from a 3.55 gear ratio to a 3.91. All the details of my car/setup can be found on my build thread. There is a lot to type. But Ill refrain from discussing it all in this thread to keep it on topic for the OP.

here is the link:

thanks

Re: What company to buy a 700R4 from?

Yup, Had a nice informative conversation with Dana on the phone last night. Learned a lot regarding my setup. I will post the details of that convo on my build thread, just to ensure that the original message/intentions of the original poster's thread stay on topic here. So Tater, feel free to give Dana a call. As many of us have mentioned, if you are looking for a stout 700r4, ProBuilt Automatics has you covered.
