Engine should not point down in front. You sure your springs are okay? Motor mounts?

Re: Stock Engine Angle on 82 Camaro

I assume you're doing this to set the mount correctly for the 2004R?
Then I'd look at the angle of the output shaft and match it to the angle the pinion is at. i/e if pinion is 2degrees up, set shaft 2 degrees down. This would be for just street/normal driving.

If you plan on racing/etc, then adjust accordingly.

But, that said, factory carb'ed vehicles usually had a 3 degree tilt in them.

PS Remember that the angle you are seeing if laying on the balancer pulley is only relative to the pinion angle. i/e if your parking spot slopes 3 degrees down and your pulley is 3 degrees opposite, you'll read Zero on your gauge...keep that in mind.

Re: Stock Engine Angle on 82 Camaro

In the end, it should be your pinion angle that makes the determination of that 'engine angle'. If you have an undamaged car, undamaged mounts throughout the drivetrain, that means trans and r e too, any angle adjustment necessary will be to optimize the pinion angle.

FWIW the stock factory engine angle is 4 degrees. That is, 4 degrees up at the front. On a carbed application, the carb pad on the intake is cut at this angle so as to ensure the carb sits level. Once you've achieved that, the pinion angle will be set next and that is equal angles front and rear. By default then the pinion would be up by that amount. In unusual situations, (such as what we discovered with the LS swapped Chevelle), the pinion nose was down but it matched the inclination of the downward crank centreline.

Get an angle finder (Home Depot sells one for $10.00) and measure your car's pinion angle. Then set the tailshaft angle the same amount by either changing the trans mount or shimming it.
