700R4 No 2-3 at WOT

Now that I have my '91 on the fast track to getting cleaned up I've ran into an issue. The 1-2 at part throttle is hard (2-2,300rpm), 2-3 at part is nice, 3-4 isn't noticeable. The problem arises at the track, 1-2 is hard, 2-3 the car just hangs at 5k and wont shift. If I back off of it it'll shift around 2,500-3k. If I go 75-90% throttle it'll shift through the entire 1-3 without a hitch. It does have a TransGo servo. Thinking its the clutch bands but it's odd that its just hanging. Car does have a Moser rear w/ 3.42s and the speed shows about 5mph high on the speedo vs GPS.

Re: 700R4 No 2-3 at WOT

I originally joined this site 15 years ago to ask this question and to this day never got a real answer, lol! Long story short sold my 86 without ever figuring it out...Put a hot cam zz4 in it back in the day. First time at the track car hit second gear and revved to over 7k and still wouldn't go into third. Would let off, it would then shift, but dropped back into second when i hit the gas again. Bought another trans and had same issue till the day sold the car. With 370's it would do over 100mph in second. It's now 2019, hopefully somebody figured it out🙄

You can buy weight and spring kits for your governor. pull your governor out and put heavier weights in it, that will make it shift sooner as long as you dont have any transmission issues. kits are cheap and its easy to do. plus you can fine tune your shift points.

EXACTLY my suspicion. Weak governor or not enough pressure in the trans to overcome to slippage. Was the transmission you replaced your old one with "built"? Shift kit/servo?

Was it an OEM replacement with no extra frills? I've had 5 88-90 GTAs, never ran into this issue with any of them.

Re: 700R4 No 2-3 at WOT

It was a full frills tranny. I was having problems with shift points. Mine was shifting to early so I pulled the governor and change weights and springs till I got what I wanted. If your not sure which governor you have I’d buy the weight and spring kit. Pull the governor and weigh the weights. The ones that come on the kit have a different profile so it may take a few tries to get it right. I went so far as to grind weight off the new ones and weighed them on my scale to get them perfect. The different springs work wonders on the shift characteristics at part throttle

Did this start happening after your gears were put in?

I couldn't tell you honestly, but I'd suspect yes. The previous owner had done the rear-end swap so I inherited this problem. I've noticed if I go for a full run before its up to temp it'll shift just fine. After it warms up however it's a no-go.
