700r4 to T5 Swap

Now I know that this definitely has been posted somewhere on here, but I am going to swap my 1985 2.8L Firebird with 700r4 to T5. I was wondering where a thread would be that would point me in the direction of how to do the swap in depth. I have done my fair share of searching for the thread but cannot find it.
Thanks in advance!

Re: 700r4 to T5 Swap

Finding the V6 bellhousing and transmission will be the most difficult part.

My advice is to get the firewall reinforcement for the clutch hydraulics and weld that in, most people don't, and a lot of them have problems. Outside of that you'll need a new chip for the computer for the T5 and everything else is the same as any other auto to manual swap, just start looking at any of those threads, there are lots of them

I didn't think you needed a T5 chip? Why is it necessary? Can they be custom made?

The car will function without the manual chip but you will have idle issues when stopping and occasional stalling problems. It's best to get the proper chip for the year car.

I have had an issue with the idle from time to time but no others that you describe. Know where I can get the correct chip?

Re: 700r4 to T5 Swap

I didn't bother changing the chip with my swap. Everything idle-wise is fine for me now that I sorted out other issues (bad MAF). I also didn't bother with the firewall reinforcement that everyone talks about, and it's been in there around 3 years.
Mine was a little different, I did a 3.4 swap first, then killed the already sketchy 700r that I had, so when I got a trans from a junkyard, I got one from a 95ish Firebird with a 3.4.
Good luck.

Re: 700r4 to T5 Swap

Can anyone post pictures of their added firewall support? I am going to be helping a friend do his T5 conversion and I want to add one

Re: 700r4 to T5 Swap

You just need to double up on the area around the clutch master, otherwise the firewall will crack eventually

I have one, but I won't remember to take a picture of it
