4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

I bought a 4.10 gear set for a 7.5 diff. I had the sets put in (all new bearings, diff rebuilt) The 4.10 gear set is very noisy - it is from Jegs (their own brand). This will not work - the installer (years of experience - works in a tranny/diff shop) says they are a b-grade. Should only be used on a truck - I am interested in the different levels or whom you have had good experience with. Motive, Richmond, Summit, etc. Any and all thoughts are appreciated - thx byron

Motive or us gear i have heard are alittle quieter but alot of it is in how you set them up

If you want the best then get the AAM gears. They are the OEM supplier for GM. US Strange from Tom's Differentials or Quick Performance is also good. Yukon is a pretty good brand. Motive is hit or miss. Summit, Jeg's USA Standard, Richmond Excel and other bargain brands are usually going to cause problems, although I've had pretty good luck with some of the Excel gears.

I have never used AAM gears, never even thought of it. Thanks..

I sure don't recommend 4.10s in a 7.5 or the "bigger" 10bolt. even with street tires they can be a time bomb unless grandma is driving.

If you do get AAM gears be sure that you set them up correctly. They will be 2 cut gears where most others are 5 cut gears. They do not set up the same way.

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

Ttop350 is right, 4:10 pinion for that rear is about as big around as a silver dollar. I always use Richmond unless it's a stang and I'll use Ford racing. Always quiet. When I do one I take a pic of the pattern to show the customer I wasn't slacking. I would suspect they got it wrong if the gears you got aren't hardened racing gears, maybe get someone else to check out their work.

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

Guys, thanks for the replys. I spoke with Jegs - I did order a set of Richmonds - they are made in the USA. The Jegs guy didn't admit the issue with their 4.10s, however, he was pretty quite about it and said - Oh, send them back. Time will tell - I was concerned about the over rev with the 4.10s. I have a limiter that will be used on the motor - it went through the gears pretty quickly.. thanks again - your input is much appreciated - byron

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

if they are noisy. they are not set up right. that's the bottom line...and like posted.. not going to last with good power...pinon teeth with snap and crack at the roots...on that rear end size...

i donno know about that , my turbo v6 car has 4:10's it with a spool , i run a 28x10.5 slick and launch that sucker with enough boost to go 1.4 60's , the only thing ive ever broken was axles and thats more due to street driving with a spool then the launches
motor makes over 400ftlbs of tq , its been threw years of abuse as well

but then again we all know ppl who grenade rears with bone stock motors including 305 and v6's so who the hell knows

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

Thanks to all, the car has 235/60/15 street tires - minimal grip. I do not anticipate it will be raced. I am concerned about the installer as a few have mentioned above. It goes back to him this week - he is also working on shift points in the 700r4 that he built. Will know later this coming week... I like the idea of taking a photo of the paint on the gears....thanks ... byron

Exactly! You just never know, had a friend do a rolling burnout on street tires with 373s and busted off 3 teeth.
Its just hit or miss

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

with over 400 fpt at 1800 rpm they just fall apart...1.44 60 ft 28x12.5x15 ET Streets.
1st set zoom.. 2nd&3rd set Richmond.. as they had a life time warrenty..its a time bomb with that small of a ring gear..
there is a way.. to just forget about braking rearend parts....

Re: 4.10 gear set noisy - best brand?

My wife broke 3 teeth off my pinion fooling around so I ordered a a moser 12 bolt. Told the it was street only but they put hardened gears in it and it was unbearably noisy. I rebuilt it with Richmond gears and it's great now.
