Broke some teeth on the pinion gear questions and options

The rear started to wine on acceleration and then broke a couple of days later. Pulled it apart and the pinion gear is missing some teeth. Currently I am running Auburn pro, Moser axles ( I think 28 spline), Richmond gear, and a stud girdle. The gears that are broken are 3:42. Has anyone put in 3:73 with their T5 and hated it? What is your RPM at 80mph?

Trying to decide if should put another set of gears in or look for something else. Currently I am only putting down around 200rwhp and 300rwtq.

That was stock in my car. Not sure how it would be a big deal.

80 mph was a bit over 3000 if memory serves; maybe 3100.

If it's a TPI motor, it's too much gear. You can't shift fast enough to keep it in the power band. (below 4200)

I like motive gears for most GM street cars.

Re: Broke some teeth on the pinion gear questions and options

I swapped in 3.73 gears from an S10 a couple years ago. First gear on my T5 is EXTREMELY short. I find myself shifting from 1-2 almost immediately, or just pulling out in 2nd if I'm on a flat or downhill. I don't remember my RPM at 80, been quite a while since I had the car up that fast. If Sofa says 3k or so, I'd believe it. Made a nice difference from my stock 3.42 gears.

Re: Broke some teeth on the pinion gear questions and options

Depends on the T5 used they came with two different 5th gears. The L69 cars came with a T5 and stock 3.73. I run a T5 and 3.73 I think I would enjoy a 3.42 a bit better but not enough to put effort into it. Here are some charts I made when I was deciding what way to go. I run a 0.62 OD hear for highway use and have had both.

Code:
		1st	2nt	3rd	4th	5th
		2.95	1.94	1.34	1	0.62

500 3	5	8	10	16
1000 7	11	15	20	33
1500 10	16	23	31	49
2000 14	21	31	41	66
2500 17	26	38	51	82
3000 21	32	46	61	99
3500 24	37	53	72	115
4000 28	42	61	82	132
4500 31	47	69	92	148
5000 35	53	76	102	165
5500 38	58	84	112	181
6000 42	63	92	123	198
Code:
		1st	2nt	3rd	4th	5th
		2.95	1.94	1.34	1	0.73

500 3	5	8	10	14
1000 7	11	15	20	28
1500 10	16	23	31	42
2000 14	21	31	41	56

There are online calculators that you can play with, put in your tire size, trans (or gear ratios), final drive ratio & you can basically make tables like Midias provided below for whatever gear ratios you're considering. That's how I picked my rear gears.

Re: Broke some teeth on the pinion gear questions and options

If you send me your email I can send my excel sheet with T5 speedo gear calculations and speed in gear per RPM with variables for ratio, tire and rear end

nothing you can do to get the 7.5 to hold up to more the 250HP..it's not good for anything but going to the store and back to the house...
