Clutch slipping

Hi guys I'm 17 and this is my first car, a 1989 Camaro rs with the 305 tbi. I have been driving it for a couple months and recently noticed the clutch slipping. It will slip in 3rd and 4th mostly. I'm wondering whether I should just buy a new clutch and pressure plate? Or can I get them re-machined? Also do I need to replace anything else? I will be doing the work mostly by myself but I am quite mechanically inclined as I have restored a 1972 Fiat 124 sport spider with my father and we did a full gearbox rebuild. After doing that I dont see any challenge with replacing my Camaro's clutch. If you guys have any problems I should foresee please let me know about those.

Thanks in advance guys!

Re: Clutch slipping

Welcome!
What you can do is just buy the clutch kit and a flywheel.

(RockAuto pricing)

For example....for your car, you can get a Clutch Kit by LUK #04017 which includes new clutch, disc, release bearing, pilot bearing , spline tool and lubricant for $70

And then get the Flywheel by LUK#LFW130 for $75.
(This is just an example)

For the cost of the flywheel, I personally would just by a new one

Re: Clutch slipping

Luk is a good brand name that has cheaped it down the river. Installed one a few years ago behind a 305 and it didn't last as long as it should have. Went with a Centerforce this time. You don't have to go that way, I'm just saying that you might want to look at something better than a $70 clutch because it's a fair bit of work to change it out.

If you get the original flywheel resurfaced for $30, it will be good as new.

Re: Clutch slipping

eselbel67.....like I said, "example". Not knowing their budget. I also use Centerforce; never any problems. Good call on the flywheel; I've done that too.

Re: Clutch slipping

a re-surface on the flywheel should be fine . just make sure all teeth on it are good . good luck ...
