4L60E - Potential broke pump, how hard to replace?

Hey Guys,

My "reco'd" transmission bought off f$%^-bay ended up being a dud, and after trying to put the converter in I suspect the pump has broken when trying to mount to the motor.

If it is in fact the pump body(forget the part name) the small ring that the converter shaft fits into, how difficult would it be to replace?

I've downloaded the manuals etc, and I'm going to begin taking THREE transmissions apart to see what I need to do to get them going, but was hoping if they've screwed the front pump part, I can just remove it and replace?

Also from looking, my old T700 which was built to handle 500+hp lost all forward gears, and going by the diagnostic chart, appears to be the forward sprag, I take it this is at the very bottom of the transmission and needs everything removed?

I don't mind doing the work and learning, and from what I can tell, apart from the thousand individual parts in the transmission, it's a simple(complex) assembly with no parts requiring setting clearances etc... it just sucks that as soon as you open it up it costs AUD$100 in gasket kits to put back together if nothing else requires replacing.

Also while I'm asking, are the T700r4 internals compatible with the 1996 4L60e transmissions?

And are most mechanical parts from a 1995 non-pwm pump LT1 4L60e interchangeable with a 1996 PWM?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 4L60E - Potential broke pump, how hard to replace?

It's very easy to damage the pump by incorrect convertor installation/engagement. The 4L60E is not the hardest to rebuild, but, it is one the hardest & requires several specialty tools that can be quite pricy, unless you have the means to make your own.IDK where you the info on no clearances will need to be set, but, that is not correct. These transmissions are not everybody's "cup of tea", even among professional rebuilders.
Most of the hard parts can be interchanged between the 4L60E & 700R4, however, most 4L60E transmissions may have different upgrades thru out it's lifespan, while the 700's parts may be outdated if original to the trans.

Re: 4L60E - Potential broke pump, how hard to replace?

Thanks for that.

Yeah I'm wondering how much it must cost to 'buy' another model number, because the "4L60E" seems to have about 50 variants.

I have the workshop manual which details step by step, and there's some pretty good videos on youtube for disassembly, so I'll have a go at taking it apart at least to work out what I need to buy for repair, but might leave the re-assembly to a shop.

At least if I get the parts and give it all to them I can save a little on cost.

For all the trouble its been worth, I think it would have been easier and cheaper to just use the T700 transmission and manually wire in a TCC lockup switch.

The other option is to "stake" the PWM solenoid in the 95 transmission and use that.
