Need stall help
I have a L98 complete bolt on's, ported heads, and small cam. I'm looking for some help on what size stall I would need for this setup? Also, any brands better then others? Don't want to break the bank on a stall but I figured while the trans is being built it would be a good time to get one. Thanks for any help.

Re: Need stall help
Price of a torque converter falls into the "get what you pay for" category. Inexpensive converters are inexpensive for a reason. Full race converters are expensive for a reason. Looking at a converter tells you nothing. You could have two different brand 10" converters side by side that both stall at the same speed and they're perform differently.
For your typical street car, keep the stall speed below 2800. Don't forget to install an aftermarket oil cooler. Stacked plate design is better than tube and fin.

Re: Need stall help
IMHO stay away from off the shelf units like B&M, and TCI. For just a little more money you can get a custom built unit from a place like PTC (performance torque converters) which would be at the top of my list for good budget converter..
Then others would be Edge, Freakshow, FTI, midwest, Circle D, Vigilante, Yank, ATI, roadrunner.
As far as stall speed goes, that depends on the cam, intake, and rear gear you are running. L98 TPI engines are not known for high RPM power so I would guess yours is about the same.. No reason in putting a 3500 stall on an engine like that. I would guess in the 2200-2800 rpm range would be what you would need.

Re: Need stall help
Night, thanks for the suggestions. I called PTC and they told me to call back Monday and we'll get the ball rolling on what I need. Spoke with Andy, nice guy and helpful too.
